

James Richard Anklam (Dick), of Tucson, Arizona, whose family homesteaded in Tucson, passed away on January 30, 2017. He was born at The Stork’s Nest on July 26, 1933. Dick graduated as valedictorian from both Tucson High and the Mining College at U of A. He was married to Markie Barker Anklam on June 5, 1955. Dick worked at Shell Oil, Johns-Manville, PMI, TUCA, and AZ Builders Alliance. While at ABA, Dick established an Electrical Apprenticeship Training Program through Pima Community College. Based on this program, the Associated General Contractors gave Tucson the coveted National AGC Training Award. He served as a City of Tucson Commissioner, Pima County Commissioner, and Tucson Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce Committee Chairperson. He was involved in the Bridge Christian Halfway House as board chairman and involved in Prison Fellowship. He was Foothills Forum Chairman, an ordained elder, and an adjunct professor at Pima College. Other accomplishments include: U of A Junior Class President; letterman; Bobcats service honorary, fraternity of Phi Gamma Delta, U of A National Board of Directors, Construction Industry’s Good Scout Award, Special Congressional Recognition from Gabrielle Giffords, and Award for Appreciation and Recognition for City of Tucson from Robert Walkup, Mayor. He was deeply committed to supporting all of his children’s activities and sports in both Danville, CA and Tucson. He is survived by his wife, Markie; children Deborah Benedict (Jeff), James (JoEllen) and Mark (Jenny); grandchildren Katrine (Jay), JP (Hawlie), Jason (Sarah), Rowan, Benjamin, Abigail, Mark, Jared, Christopher, and William; great grandchildren Kylie, Brooklyn, Peyton, Lincoln, Beau; brother Larry (Sherry). Additional family: Gary Gilliland (Karen); Steve Bilynskyj (Beth); Helen Pearson (Randy); Richard Anklam. He was preceded in death by parents Joseph Ralph and Jessie Rynerson Paddock Anklam. A celebration of his life will be on Saturday, Feb. 4, 2017 at 11 a.m. at Catalina Foothills Church.
