Francis M. Verona, CMDR US Navy Retired. March 2, 1937 – March 24, 2025
Francis (Frank) M. Verona was a dedicated Navy officer, loving husband, father, and passionate sports enthusiast. He passed away peacefully on March 24, 2025, in Tucson, Arizona, at the age of 88.
Born on March 2, 1937, in New York, Frank was a proud college graduate of the United States Merchant Marine Academy at King's Point. After earning his degree, he joined the U.S. Navy as an Officer, where he embarked on a distinguished career spanning decades. A devoted Submariner for much of his career, Frank later transitioned to the Surface Fleet in the late 1970s.
Frank had many highlights during his 30-year career. From patrolling the Atlantic Coast during the Cuban Missile Crisis to his assignment as one of the Commanders onboard the USNS Mercy, a floating hospital ship providing medical care and humanitarian assistance to 62,000 patients during its inaugural mission in the Philippines. In 1987, Frank retired and settled, alongside his wife Donna, in Tucson, Arizona. After retirement from the US Navy, Frank worked for H&R Block for 23 years where he continued to serve his community. He was particularly dedicated to helping the elderly and shut-ins, giving his time above and beyond.
Frank was a man of many passions. An athlete in his youth, he played both basketball and baseball during high school and college. His love for sports continued into adulthood, where he found great joy in coaching his children in their various sports. Many times, Frank would be the only parent in the stands cheering for each respective son or daughter, followed by a very intensive, yet insightful post-game analysis on the drive home, win or lose.
Frank is survived by his beloved wife of 41 years, Donna Verona; their children: Mike Verona (Danni), Kim Verona Hansen (Brad), and Alison Verona Castles (Tom), Annette Servia; 10 grandchildren; and 5 great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, Francis R. Verona and Rosalind (Shanahan) Verona, and son, Joseph Servia. He will be deeply missed.
Throughout his life, Frank dedicated himself to his Family, his Country, his Faith in God, and his community.
Frank's legacy of service, love, and dedication will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know him.
Bravo Zulu.
