He grew up in West Hartford, CT, graduated from William Hall High School in
1957, and his love of music led him to the Hall High School Chorale and playing the base
violin. After graduating from RPI, Herb worked for IBM in Poughkeepsie, NY,
where he met his future wife, Carolyn McBride. IBM stood for I’ve Been Moved,
and he and Carolyn married and then moved to Broomfield, Colorado and then to
Tucson, Arizona. For many years and wherever he lived, Herb was an avid
volunteer reader for the Books for Blind. Herb always loved animals and
would send pictures to his sister of the animals that would come to his back
door for food. Herb ran, unsuccessfully, for Governor of Arizona in the ‘80’s.
He and Carolyn did a lot of traveling by car and, with pride, would share his
pictures and itinerary with his sister and his nephews and nieces. He is
predeceased by his parents, Harold and Gladys (Purinton) Johnson. He
leaves his wife of 47 years, Carolyn, his brother Theodore (Ted) Johnson,
his sister Pat Mancinelli, his very special and loved Aunt Lillian Purinton,
many nieces and nephews and long time and good friends Peter Sauerwein,
Larry Proulx and Nancy Fitch Harms. Memorial contributions in Herb’s
name may be made to the no-kill animal shelter Best Friends of Utah.
Arrangements are private.
