Joanna Lee Hallcox, 76, of Tucson, Arizona, passed away peacefully on July 20, 2025. A native of San Diego, California, Joanna spent nearly her entire life in the area before relocating to Tucson in 2022.
Born Joanna Lee Bolieu on May 27, 1949, in San Diego, she was the eldest of five children of Edward W. Bolieu and Mattie Katharine “Kathy” Bolieu (née Robinson). She grew up in the community of Lemon Grove, where she enjoyed a vibrant childhood and family life.
Shortly after graduating high school, Joanna began working at a downtown San Diego restaurant. It was there, just two days into her job, that she met the love of her life, Kenneth R. Hallcox. After a year of courtship, they married on August 16, 1968, at First Baptist Church in Lemon Grove and spent the next 54 years together. Together they raised three children: James, Aaron, and Rayna, and were later blessed with six beloved grandchildren.
Joanna was a dedicated stay-at-home mother before joining the Cajon Valley School District in 1984. Starting as a teacher’s aide in the computer lab, working with Apple IIe computers, she developed her skills in educational technology. Over the course of 33 years, she advanced to the position of Computer Support Technician, assisting multiple schools with their tech needs before retiring in 2018.
Joanna was known for her beautiful soprano voice. A member of her high school’s Ensemble choir, she later sang for many years in her church choir. She considered her singing a gift to be used in worship and was known for her heartfelt and powerful voice, which often moved others during services.
A natural social butterfly, Joanna made friends wherever she went and cherished long conversations with those she loved. She had a special fondness for ladybugs, a nickname given to her by Ken that became a personal emblem. Over the years, she collected many ladybug-themed gifts that brought her joy and reflected her playful spirit.
Above all, Joanna was a devoted daughter of Christ. She had a deep love for the Bible and was always seeking new studies to deepen her understanding of God’s word. Her faith guided her life and inspired those around her.
Joanna is survived by her children, James Hallcox, Aaron “Mat” Hallcox, and Rayna (Eugene) Moorcroft; grandchildren, Kaylie, Samantha, Madison, and Sienna Hallcox, and Andrew and Colin Moorcroft; siblings, Laura Bolieu Austin (CW), Cheryl Rafailakis, and Ronald Bolieu. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Ken, her parents, and her brother, Steven Bolieu.
The Hallcox family will be holding a memorial service, 11am on August 16th, 2025, at First Baptist Church, Lemon Grove. Interment will take place at Arizona Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Marana, Arizona in joining her beloved Ken.
