John Annerino and  were the best of friends during out college days at Scottsdale Community College. He was an amazing friend. Like brothers we each had dreams of doing well when we left college. John raised the bar in every way. I can't begin to count the number of times we had together.  John went on to set the mark as a wilderness runner, mountain climber, writer and photo journalist. His life was what legends are made of. His books and photography captured a generation of those who love adventure.  So so so many memories. It's hard to thing of a man who got more out of life than John. John I will see you in heaven man and we can pick up where we left off. Love you my brother.  F. Michael Johnson

Dear family. I didn’t know John had passed until today. A series of moments happened to me today that lead me to this obituary page.  I think you will understand if I say, I feel like John lead me to know today with messages to follow. 
We were friends for over thirty years. I was his editor at Gamma Liaison and his friend all the years after. 
I’m a bit in shock right now. I texted him on his birthday and he called me and said “I’ll call you tomorrow “, but I didn’t hear from him. We hadn’t spoken since the Spring when my Mom died but although it had been several months, I never imagined we wouldn’t speak again. 
My deepest sympathy to you. He was a wonderful man and a great photographer and friend.

I just learned about this.  Very sad news. We had a lot of history, and I had some wonderful, unusual and certainly memorable experiences with John and his family in our youth. I’m thankful for great memories.  But I’m so sad. Deepest condolences to all family.

I’m stunned with sadness to learn that my old friend and colleague John Annerino has finally run beyond the horizon. Back in the late ‘70s when we both lived in Groom Creek, Arizona, three or four times a week John and I would run up to the old Hassayampa Mine in the Prescott National Forest. Of course, I could never keep up with him. Just this past August, we traded several emails about our current projects. He said our exchange re-energized and inspired him about a new book he’d been researching, and we agreed that the next time I was in Arizona, we’d rendezvous again on the Hassayampa.
	Now I’ll go there alone, I guess, and drop an oak leaf with his name written on it into the canyon. The truth is, John has been a career-long inspiration to me. Back then, we were both struggling to be writers or photographers — or both; whichever paid first — and John was determination personified: He absolutely never quit, no matter what. He couldn’t possibly know how much his example has meant to me, but I’m glad that in our recent communication I tried to tell him.   As a result of his astonishing persistence, he leaves us a large, fine body of work about his devotion to the Western landscape and its peoples.
	To Alejandrina and their sons, mi más sentido pésame. My wife, Beckie Kravetz, and I share your loss. John was such an original. God bless him and you.
