My friendship with Kathy goes back over 50 years. We shared many "firsts," including our first teaching jobs at Parkway West High School, coaching softball together, and traveling to Italy in 1986. We were planning a reprise of that trip in 2023, renting a house near Firenze with friends. How I will miss her company! Despite the movements of our lives--which took us in different directions--we shared a deep affinity for literature, erudite thinking, clear and compelling writing, hospitality, and the love that true friendship inspires.  Kathy always said, "Time is not something that holds meaning for us." So true! She was funny, unfailingly loyal to her family and friends, curious about everything; straightforward and honest in both her professional and personal lives. There was never a dull conversation when we were together. I couldn't, however, convince her to drink coffee or cheer for the Cubs! Guess everyone has at least one weakness!

I often spend mornings at my local coffee shop reading and writing. Last week, I wrote a poem for Kathy. I wanted to post it here, but the format ran all the stanzas together, making the whole thing unintelligible! I will share it with Liz. Miss you, my dear friend.
