March 13, 1936 – October 8, 2025
Peter Edward Knoedler, 89, a longtime resident of Diablo, California, passed away peacefully on October 8, 2025, in Tucson, Arizona, due to heart failure, while living with his devoted son and caretaker, Stephen.
Born in Queens, New York, Peter was the son of Louis Knoedler and Josephine Rupprath. One of five siblings, Peter’s early life was shaped by his family’s frequent moves due to his father’s career as a buyer for Little Jones Co. in New York City. He often shared fond memories of his childhood in Shanghai, China with his beloved nanny Amah and his later years living on a farm in Gilbert, Pennsylvania.
Peter was preceded in death by his wife of over 50 years, Mary Ellen “Artie” (Deutermann) Knoedler, and by his siblings Karl P. Knoedler, John David Knoedler, Alice Nerenstone, and Donna Davies. He is survived by his three children: Peter Knoedler, Amy (Chambliss), and Stephen Knoedler; his brother, Andy Knoedler; and four grandchildren: Matthew and Andrew Knoedler, and Mason and Megan Chambliss.
Peter graduated from Belvidere High School, where he excelled as a basketball player and all-around athlete. He also had a passion for the arts, participating in theater and chorus, and dreamed of becoming an actor. He attended the University of Miami before moving to California to pursue that dream.
It was in Santa Barbara that Peter met the love of his life, Mary Ellen, after stopping to help her with car trouble in their neighborhood. The couple married in 1963 at Mission Santa Barbara and went on to raise three children. They lived first in Corte Madera’s historic Christmas Tree Hill neighborhood, and later settled in Diablo, where Peter restored a 1915 colonial home and became deeply involved in the local community.
Professionally, Peter began in international business with Hitachi, frequently traveling to Japan—a country and culture he grew to deeply admire. Later, he founded his own commercial real estate development firm, Diablo Ventures West, later known as Knoedler Enterprises. He was active in local politics and served on several Contra Costa County boards.
Peter’s passion for community extended beyond business. He was a fixture in the Diablo Swim Team scene, volunteering as a starter at meets, and was a dedicated coach in the Catholic Youth Organization (CYO), where he led both boys’ and girls’ teams with heart and discipline. He was also a member of St. Isidore Church and volunteered regularly at St. Isidore School, where his children were students. At De La Salle High School, he remained a loyal supporter, volunteering countless hours and serving on the first-ever Board of Regents under Brother Jerome.
Peter was a dog lover, and his home was always filled with the joyful presence of canine companions who brought him great comfort and companionship throughout his life.
After the passing of his wife in 2014, Peter relocated to Tucson, Arizona, to be cared for by his son Stephen. Despite the change in scenery, his heart remained close to his cherished memories—summers in Santa Barbara at Miramar Beach, time spent at the Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club, and family vacations to Kauai, particularly at the Kiahuna Plantation. His love for the ocean was evident in his favorite boat, a Grand Banks he fondly named “The Kiahuna,” which he docked in Sausalito.
Peter will be remembered not only as a successful businessman and dedicated community member, but above all as a fiercely loyal and loving husband, father, and grandfather. He never missed a game, a recital, or a moment to support his family. He lived by the principles he often shared with his children and grandchildren: “Do the best with what God has given you,” “Stay on the path,” “Be tough but fair,” and “Keep going.”
Those who knew Peter knew his personality was one of strong will and bold conviction—an acquired taste, perhaps—but his fierce spirit and competitive nature were part of his legacy, one that lives on in his children and grandchildren.
Peter Knoedler lived a full and passionate life, marked by love, resilience, and dedication to family and community. He will be deeply missed.
