

affectionately known as “Bo Guess” was born August 3, 1952, in
Kosciusko, Mississippi to the late Mary Elizabeth Terry and Henry Thomas Bell.
Soon after having Bo, his mother Mary moved from Mississippi to Tucson Arizona.
She met and married CV Guess and together they raised six children. Bo attended
school in Tucson, first Jefferson Park Elementary, then Roskruge Jr. High and finally
graduating from Tucson High. He also, attended Pima College and other trade schools
seeking to further his education.
In 1973, Bo married Debra Askew and had their first child, Chandra, in 1973. Three
years later their second daughter Rafiki was born. He wanted boys so bad; he called
Chandra (Charlie) and Rafiki (Robert). In the same year Chandra was born, he joined
the U.S. Army dedicating 15 years of his life servicing his country. As a transportation
specialist in the Army, he had the honor of driving former U.S. Attorney General Collin
Powell to an assigned location in Korean.
In 1987, he met Betty Dixon and relocated to Long Beach, CA. in 1988. He worked for
his ex-father-in-law T.J. Askew, until his starting date in April with the Long Beach Navy
Shipyard. He was a “Jack- of- all trades thanks to his father CV Guess for teaching and
training him in automotive and mechanical skills. He was well known as the best car
technician and car wash detailer in North Long Beach. He laid carpet, repaired
plumbing, painted houses, remodel and decorated house from top to bottom. Bo even
had a green thumb with indoor and outdoor plants and loved roses of all colors.
Bo and Betty joined their two families in unity in 1992 and they became known as the
“Bell-bunch.” He was extremely honored to call two boys and two more girls his children,
turning his offspring pool to six He was a great father to his six children taking them back
and forth to Tucson and California over the years to stay in touch with his Arizona family.
Education was very important to Bo and Betty, they worked hard to help their children
graduation for high school and even attend college.
After retiring from Camp Pendleton as a merchant marine 2015. One of his hobbies was
hanging out with his grandchildren. On any given day, he could be seen watching TV with
them, taking them to the store or taking them for a walk. Other hobbies included trips to
local casinos with his friend Thoronton and playing dominos with his buddy Moe.
He leaves to mourn his wife of 30 years, Betty Bell, and their six children: Chandra (Antione)
Sherfield, RaFiki Bell, James Dixon, Terri Dixon, DeQuincy Dixon and Krystle (Delvon)
Braxton. He also leaves behind 14 grandchildren, his beloved sister Karen Reed of Tucson,
Aunt Vivian (Ron) Chilton Tucson, Aunt Maggie Beckwith of Tucson and Aunt Essie Terry of
Tucson. He had no shame at calling his three aunts in the middle of the night to talk about
anything and everything. Our beloved Bo leaves behind a host of other family that includes
cousins, nephews, nieces and more that he loved dearly.
William Bell Guess departed from this life on July 23, 2017 to spend an eternity in heaven
with his mother Elizabeth Mary Guess, father C.V. Guess, mother-in-law Rubbie Salter,
baby brother Jimmy Ray Guess and Aunt Alice Jean Guess among other relatives.
