

passed away Saturday, November 12, 2011 at his home. Dan was born to James and Dora Smith on July 18, 1928 in Shelton, Washington. He served in the United States Marine Corp from 1946 - 1947. Dan lived in Fairbanks, Alaska from 1948 to 1966 where he met his wife Pauline, and was the birth place of all four of his children. Pauline preceded him in death in 1995. Dan signed his first pro baseball contract with the Bremerton Blue Jackets and later played in Great Falls, Montana before moving to Fairbanks, Alaska where he played in 10 consecutive Midnight Sun Games. He was a Chevron dealer for over 40 years, living in Fairbanks, Bremerton, Port Angeles, Aberdeen and Hoquiam and finally settling in Olympia. After "retirement", he helped son-in-law Mike open up his business and drove the shuttle van for over 10 years. He is survived by sons, David (Robin) and Dan (Sue); daughters, Jan Shelstad (Mike) and Jill. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, and one great grandchild on the way, as well as many nieces and nephews. His many interests include Seattle Mariners - Spring Training, fishing, going to the Seattle Storm games, all sports, and spending time with his family. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Grandpa can be made to Providence St. Peter Foundation, Cardiac Rehab Fund.
