Mary Moran of Olympia, WA passed away peacefully on June 11, 2015. Born in Ronald WA on March 1, 1917, she led a full life and will be remembered as a loving wife and mother to her family and as a good friend to the many people whose lives she touched over the years.
She attended Central Washington State University where she received a Certificate in Education, followed by a BA in Education from the University of Washington. After five years of teaching at Seattle’s Bryant Elementary School, she left for San Diego to work as a family counselor for the Red Cross. It was during this time that she met her future husband, Tom Moran. The swift romance of 3 months was followed by 66 years of marriage. His career in the United States Navy allowed them to live, work and travel throughout the world. While living in the Philippine Islands, Mary attended the Philippine’s Women’s University and completed her Masters Degree in Social Work. In 1963, the family moved to Olympia, WA and Mary began her career as a psychiatric social worker with the Thurston County Department of Social Welfare, leaving two years later to join the nascent Community Mental Health Center. She remained with that agency until her retirement in 1982. Thereafter she spent her time doing what she loved best - reading, traveling and spending time with family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband. She is survived by her five children: Marka Polhemus (John), Tom Moran (Jolyn), Jody Moran (Chuck Bailey), Libby Sheafe (Kurt) and Marjorie Moran, as well as six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
