Paul was born in Portland, Oregon to Swiss immigrants, Paul and Louise Ryser on April 28, 1929. He had one sibling, a sister, Mary Louise who was born in 1932. He grew up in Deer Island, Oregon. When he was a junior in high school they moved to Menlo, Washington. Paul graduated from Valley High School in 1947.
Paul began work at the Aberdeen National Bank of Commerce in 1949 where he was a stock boy. On January 8, 1951 he enlisted in the United States Navy. He was assigned to the Fletcher class Destroyer USS Kidd DD661 and during his time in the navy saw action in the Korean Conflict. He was honorably discharged on December 23, 1952.
After the conflict Paul returned to Washington and married his sweetheart, Marlene Van Rooy, on July 18, 1953 in Raymond, Washington. They moved to Aberdeen where Paul continued his employment at the National Bank of Commerce. He had several transfers to other NBC banks, first to Montesano and then Centralia. He finished his career with NBC in Camas, Washington in 1976 where he was the branch manager. After moving to Olympia he became Vice President for Bank of Olympia, then Vice President of Puget Sound National Bank and finally Senior Vice President of Puyallup Valley Bank. He retired at age 60 in 1989.
Paul and Marlene were married for 67 years. They had six children, David Ryser, Gary Ryser, Susan Ryser Richardson, Steven Ryser, John Ryser, and Diana Ryser Evans. They have 14 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. Paul is survived by his wife Marlene and his sister Mary Louise Ryser Rothlin. Paul was active in the Knights of Columbus. During his life he spent his leisure time with his family, camping and hiking.
