Ronald Matthew Huber, born on November 9, 1942, in Olympia, Washington, to Paul and Ruth Huber, was the sixth of seven children. He spent most of his early years in Olympia before joining the U.S. Navy at 18. After completing his radarman training at Treasure Island in San Francisco, he was stationed aboard the USS Chicago, the first guided missile cruiser in the Navy fleet. The Chicago underwent multiple training runs between San Francisco and San Diego, where Ron spent much of his service, patrolling the West Coast during the Vietnam War.
It was during this time that Ron met JoAnn LaTorre, who would become his wife of 61 years. They were stationed between San Francisco and San Diego, building a life together in the military.
After his service, Ron and JoAnn returned to Olympia, where he worked at the Olympia Brewing Company for 30 years. Upon retirement, Ron indulged in his love for the outdoors, particularly hunting, fishing, and golfing. Whether he was venturing into the woods to hunt deer and elk, casting lines in Canadian waters with friends, or enjoying rounds of golf with JoAnn and others, he embraced these passions wholeheartedly. Ron also spent countless hours tending to his yard, taking pride in its upkeep. Winters were spent in Arizona, where the couple found joy in the warmth and community there.
Ron is survived by his wife JoAnn, children Michele Garrett (Randy) and Derrick Huber (Angela), five grandchildren: Crystal Allarde (Peter), Kasi Peters (Roger), Kayla Huber, Ryan Killion (Courtney), and Steven Huber, as well as six great-grandchildren: Jaden Allarde, Jordyn Allarde, Jaslyn Allarde, Wylder and Loxley Peters, and Kennedy Killion. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Byron, Darrell, Danny, and Frank, and is survived by his two sisters, Vadera and Helen.
A longtime member of Grace Community Covenant Church, Ron’s faith was an important part of his life, as was his love for family and friends. He will be remembered fondly for his devotion, kindness, and zest for life.
