Maria Alvarina Sousa, 87, of Modesto, California, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, at Memorial Medical Center in Modesto, California. She had been a longtime resident of Modesto, where she lived for 57 years.
Maria was born in Cinco Ribeiras, Terceira, Açores, to Maria Isabel and João Ivo Fontes. She is survived by her grandson Garrett Sousa, who was her pride and joy, and her daughter-in-law Donna Sousa, both of Modesto. Maria is also survived by her sister Eulalia Fontes of Cinco Ribeiras, Terceira, as well as her godchildren Maria Fatima Borba and David Sousa, along with many extended family members.
Maria was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She was especially devoted to her family, doting on her grandson Garrett, who brought immense joy and pride to her life. Her love and care for those around her were evident in everything she did, and she always made sure her loved ones knew how much they meant to her.
Maria was preceded in death by her husband Gabriel Sousa; her son Gabriel Sousa Jr.; her parents João Ivo and Maria Isabel Fontes along with her siblings; Manuel Evo Fontes, João Able Fontes and Armindo Fontes and Maria de Fatima Fontes.
A longtime member of Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church in Turlock, California, Maria’s faith was an integral part of her life.
A visitation will be held Thursday, February 20, 2025, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Whitehurst-Norton-Dias Funeral Service, 286 West Main, Turlock, CA 95380. A recitation of the rosary and funeral mass will occur Friday, February 21, 2025, at 10:30 AM at Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church, 2602 S Walnut Rd, Turlock, CA 95380.
A committal service will take place at Turlock Memorial Park, 575 N Soderquist Rd, Turlock, CA 95380, later that same day.
Serving as pallbearers are Garrett Sousa, Walter Borba, Gabriel Borba, Cesar Fontes, Michael Fontes and Carlos Fontes.

Foi precedida na morte pela seu esposo Gabriel Sousa; seu filho Gabriel Sousa Jr.; seus pais, João Ivo e Maria Isabel Fontes; e sues irmãos, Manuel Evo Fontes, João Able Fontes, Armindo Fontes e Maria de Fatima Fontes.
A Sra. Sousa era membro da Igreja Católica Nossa Senhora da Assunção, em Turlock, Califórnia.
O velório realiza-se na quinta-feira, 20 de fevereiro de 2025, das 4h às 8h da noite na Whitehurst-Norton-Dias, 286 West Main, Turlock, CA 95380-4814.
A recitação do terço e a missa terão lugar sexta-feira, 21 de fevereiro de 2025, às 10h30 da manhã, na Igreja Católica Nossa Senhora da Assunção, 2602 S Walnut Rd, Turlock, seguindo-se o sepultamento no Turlock Memorial Park, na 575 N Soderquist Rd, Turlock, CA 95380.
