November 11, 1925 – February 28, 2025
Serafin “Tut” Borba, a longtime resident of Merced County, California, passed away peacefully surrounded by family at the age of 99 on February 28, 2025. Born on November 11, 1925, in Pleasanton, California, and raised in Hughson, California Tut dedicated nearly a century to his family and his work.
At the age of 17, Tut proudly enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving his country from April 1, 1943, to January 13, 1947. He was stationed aboard the USS New Orleans, a heavy cruiser that played a significant role in World War II. As a Gunner’s Mate, he was responsible for maintaining the ship's weaponry, while also attending to various other duties that contributed to the vessel's operations. His time in the Navy was a source of pride, shaping his lifelong commitment to hard work and perseverance.
After his service, Tut returned home to continue the work he loved as a dairyman. With an incredible 75-year career in the dairy industry, he was known for his strong work ethic and deep connection to the land.
Above all, Tut cherished his family. He was a devoted father to his children: Rick (Janet) Borba, Carol (Butch) Valenta, Marilyn (Ed) Kissam, Duane (Pam) Borba, Gerald Borba, Larry (Lynn) Borba, and Beverly Wildes. His legacy continues through his 21 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren, and 10 great-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Tut was preceded in death by his parents, Serafin and Lena Borba, as well as his nine siblings.
Beyond his work, Tut had a passion for raising birds and took great pride in caring for his yard. When not outdoors Tut could be found reading a Louie Lamour novel or working on a word search puzzle. Whether outdoors or in you rarely would find him without his Copenhagen unless there was a maple bar or saltwater taffy within reach. If you stopped by to visit you could count on an old western being on the television or if you sat in the kitchen, you would be treated to watching hummingbirds.
A proud World War II veteran, Tut will be remembered for his resilience, hard work, and the love he shared with those around him. He will be deeply missed by all who have the privilege of knowing him.
Services will be held at San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery 32053 McCabe Road, Santa Nella, CA 95322 at 12:30pm, and a reception will be following at the VFW Post 7792 located at 7093 Walnut Avenue, Winton, CA 95388 at 2pm. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests you make a donate to the charity of your choice in his name.
Rest in peace, Tut. Your legacy lives on in the hearts of those you loved.
