She was born and raised in Tuscaloosa, graduated from Tuscaloosa High School and went to work for Southern Bell. Later, her parents moved to Selma, Alabama, and so she transferred to Selma. She retired from Southern Bell and continued to live there until she moved back to Tuscaloosa in 2010 to live with her nephew Velon.
Soon after going to Selma with her parents, Betty bought some acreage in Valley Grande, a town about seven miles from Selma. Two of her friends, Lillie and Peggy bought places there too. The community is called the Summerford community. They were soon known as the “Summerford Trio.” All three women loved the outdoors and through the years they had various animals and always had a garden. Betty even bought a wood burning stove to use for canning vegetables. This continued until her friends died and she went to live with Velon.
Funeral arrangements were made through Heritage funeral home. The funeral will be Thursday, May 23rd. A viewing will be at 10:00 am and a graveside service will be at 11:00 AM at Evergreen Cemetery. Rev. Scott Peters will preside.
