DJ passed away at the age of 60 the night of January 7th after an extended illness. He was surrounded by his family and passed very peacefully. DJ was born in Syracuse, New York in 1965 but was raised for the majority of his life in Northport, AL. He was a graduate of Tuscaloosa County High School in 1983. After graduation DJ immediately went to work in the oil and gas business for multiple companies that recognized and appreciated his hard work and ability to diagnose and resolve problems. These talents lead him to the automotive service business as a service director for numerous dealerships in the Tuscaloosa area including Lancaster Oldsmobile, Tuscaloosa Chevrolet and eventually as the service director for Mercedes Benz of Tuscaloosa over the last 10 years.
DJ was a dedicated and loving father to his two daughters, Casey and Cayla. As the girls grew older they became interested in fastpitch softball. In an effort to spend as much time as possible with his daughters, DJ became one of the original board members of the West Alabama Girls Fastpitch Softball Association. He also helped form a fastpitch softball traveling team called “Bama Express”. He spent countless nights and weekends at softball fields all over the state of Alabama and other adjacent states, watching and coaching his daughters and numerous other young girls from the Tuscaloosa area. In his “spare” time he also started a local lawn care business with his nephew, Cole Deason.
Anyone who knew DJ knew that he was an avid and passionate Notre Dame football fan. He enjoyed watching the Fighting Irish every Saturday in the fall with his family. He also made several trips with his family to South Bend, Indiana to watch the Irish play in person. The constant theme throughout DJ’s life was his love for his family, his friends and Notre Dame Football.
DJ was preceded in death by his father, James O’Shea McMahon and survived by his mother, Antoinette Pasquale McMahon; his daughters, Casey (Jeph) and Cayla (Trey); his brothers, Kevin McMahon (Jo) and Gary McMahon; his sister, Paula Deason; four grandchildren and another one expected soon.
Pallbearers are Gary McMahon, Cole Deason, Trey Jernigan, Ken Free, Paul Huddleston & Greg Peoples.
Honorary pallbearers are Steve and Pam Browne, the staff and customers at Mercedes Benz of Tuscaloosa, Jeph Searcy, Paul Deason, Jesse Colburn, Troy Free, Ricky Cox, Ricky Ward, Chuck Eves, Ricky and Beth Ward, Dr. Dubay and staff, the staff at The Cancer Treatment Center, the staff at Hospice of West Alabama, and the staff at Northport DCH ICU.
Services honoring the life of DJ McMahon will be held at the graveside only on Wednesday, January 14, 2026 at 2:00 at Memory Hill Gardens. Family and friends are invited to gather to share prayers, memories and a final farewell. Following the graveside service, family and friends are invited to a celebration of life at the home of Cole and Dana Deason at 5151 Harper Road, Northport, AL 35473.
