Dr. Wood was born in Calera, Alabama on October 27, 1928 to the late Kavanaugh and Helen Wood. Known as “E.K.” to all, he graduated from Birmingham Southern College in 1950 and The University of Alabama School of Dentistry in 1954. E.K. served two years in the United States Air Force and then moved his family to Tuscaloosa in 1956 to open his dental practice, which he continued for 55 years until his retirement in 2011.
Dr. Wood loved his patients and always knew his dental practice was his opportunity to serve others and was God’s purpose for his life. E.K. was an active member of Calvary Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and taught the Keystone Sunday School Class. His life was dedicated to loving and serving the Lord and his family and many friends. E.K. had a great gift in communicating, encouraging, and comforting anyone, from any walk of life. Having spent many childhood summers on his grandfather’s farm, Dr. Wood purchased land and built “The Farm” which he enjoyed for many years, often doing vigorous work in the outdoors. E.K. was a kind, generous man with a lot of interests and hobbies, and a lifelong interest in learning. He lived a full and active life and was a true southern gentleman. We will miss his deep voice, gentle kind spirit, and sense of humor.
