Gary Hamner

Gary Edward Hamner was a loving husband, dedicated father, grandfather, and loyal friend who peacefully passed away on August 1, 2023, at Northport Medical Center. A service will be held at Memory Chapel Funeral Home on Saturday, August 5, 2023, at 3:00 PM with Todd Burkhalter presiding. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at Memory Hill Gardens.

During his life, he traveled each and every highway, and he did it his way.

He graduated from Holt High School, class of 1963. He briefly attended The University of Alabama and was a part of the Million Dollar Band. After college, he briefly served his country in the United States Air Force. Gary managed Trailways Bus Company and was the owner and operator of Downtown Amoco and Deli, both in Tuscaloosa. During his retirement, he shared his gifts of art and music by painting portraits and crooning karaoke versions of the classics.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward Cullen Hamner and Notie Swindal Hamner; loving wife of 50 years, Frances Elaine Mitchell Hamner; parents-in-law, Harry Victor Mitchell and Anna Mikul Mitchell; brothers-in-law David Mitchell, Henry “Bubs” Cummings, Russell Hood, and Dr. John Mitchell.

Gary is survived by his sister, Cherry Hamner Hood, Tuscaloosa, AL; sister-in-law, Mary Anne Mitchell Cummings, Tuscaloosa, AL; son, Dr. Chad Edward Hamner and wife Jana Wunderlich, Fort Worth, TX; son Eric Michael Hamner and wife, Jennifer Kasprisin Hamner, Tuscaloosa, AL; grandchildren, Jackson, Wyatt, Owen, and Gunnar Hamner, Fort Worth, TX. Margaret and Eleanor Hamner, Tuscaloosa, AL; many cherished nieces, nephews, extended family, and numerous friends.

Pallbearers will be Dr. Chad Hamner, Eric Hamner, Mike Mitchell, Steve Mitchell, Mark Mitchell, Chris Cummings, Henry Boone Cummings Jr, and Scott Gaddy.
