Sarah Nell Chandler, after living for ninety four and one half years, left us on the morning of March 31, 2018. She died peacefully in her sleep and will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her. For all but her final three years, she was an active, life loving woman who exercised every morning in the pool and every afternoon in her home. She lived her life with intensity and the desire to excel every day.
Sarah was born in Moore’s Bridge, Alabama on September 17, 1923 to James Eber Vice and his wife, Lovie Mae Ballard Vice. Although she lived most of her life outside of Alabama, Sarah remained a life- long fan of the Crimson Tide, watching them win yet another national championship this January.
Alfred B. Chandler, her husband for thirty-seven years preceded her in death in 1981 after 37 years in marriage. Together they lived in Wisconsin, Kentucky, Texas, Long Island, Ohio, and Florida. She is also preceded in death by sisters Lois Aldridge, Nota Dwinnel, Erdeal Slaughter, and brother Holly Vice. She is survived by her son Duke Chandler, daughter in law Donna James Chandler, grandson USMC Sergeant Jordan Chandler, sister Hilton Hammond, a resident of Palmetto, Alabama and numerous nieces and nephews.
Sara lived for thirty-six years in Jensen Beach in a beachfront condo where she loved to watch the sun rise over the Gulfstream and set over the wide Intracoastal Waterway. She marveled at the aeronautical skill of the pelicans as they soared over the water in formation and the wonder of turtles returning year after year to her beloved beach to lay their eggs. She enjoyed volunteering at the Jensen Beach Chamber of Commerce and attended church in Stuart, Florida. When her health began to fail, she moved to Deerfield Beach to be closer to her son. However, her heart has always been in Alabama, and it is to this state that she will now return.
A graveside funeral service will be held at 11 A. M. on Friday, April 20th at Memory Hills Gardens Cemetery, 2200 Skyland Blvd. East, Tuscaloosa, Alabama 35405. A private visitation for family will be held immediately prior to the service at 10:30 A. M.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial donations be made to Julia’s Star Foundation at PO Box 472, Deerfield Beach, FL 33433 or online at www.juliasstarfoundation.org. Cards may be sent to Duke Chandler at 5311 W. Hillsboro Blvd., #107, Coconut Creek, FL 33073.
