(December 8, 1947 – January 30, 2026) John Garofalo, 78, of Union, New Jersey, passed away peacefully on January 30, 2026. Born on December 8, 1947, John lived life to the fullest, embracing every moment with his signature humor, unbreakable spirit, and larger-than-life personality.
John was a fixture at Mario's Tutto Bene, the beloved Italian restaurant on Chestnut Street in Union, where he built a community around his table, one plate of pasta at a time. He was quick to always help out the community whether it be with a tray of pasta or a donation to help the cause.
A devoted family man, John is survived by his loving wife of many years, Elizabeth; his four sons, Brian, John, Michael, and Eric; and his seven cherished grandchildren, who brought him endless joy. He was predeceased by his beloved daughter, Lori, his brother Albert, and his sister Phyllis. He is also survived by his sister Donna and brother Bobby, along with many extended family members and friends who were drawn to his magnetic charm. John was a friend to all—quick with a joke, generous with his time, and always ready to lend a hand (except, perhaps, to anyone he owed money to, as he would say with a wink and a grin). His sharp wit, infectious laugh, and zest for life touched everyone who knew him. Heaven is now going to have its hands full with John's energy and stories.
A celebration of John's life will be held at a McCracken Funeral Home in Union, NJ on February 3, 2026, from 3-7 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the St Jude Organization. John Garofalo lived boldly, loved deeply, and will be profoundly missed. His humor and spirit will live on in the hearts of all who were lucky enough to know him. Rest in peace, John—until we meet again.
In lieu of flowers, please donate to St. Jude's.
