I have so many fond memories of "Mr. Mitchell".  There are two that stand out in particular.  They are both from when Eileen and I were in high school.   One is when Eileen and I would be in the bathroom getting all "dolled up" to go to a Friday night football game.  Mr. Mitchell would walk by the bathroom and say to us "  You don't need all that make-up.  You're more beautiful without it. Looking back he was right. Eileen and I also thought it would be a good idea to join the Army.  Mr. Mitchell put his foot down and said no way was that happening.  Thank God.  I was not courageous or brave enough for that job.  There are so many wonderful memories I have of your beloved Husband/Father and family. I am so sorry for your loss. George and I and our family have known Mitch for more than 50 years, he was our best man when we married.  We raised our 4 children each more or less in close sequence.  Such wonderful memories early on when our husbands taught us how to play pinochle and then knocked our socks off until we finally figured things out at least 25 years later and started to beat them.
Then came our mutual interest in camping and we took the kids all over the place until finally a trip across country and a cruise to Italy with other camping members resulting in memorable experiences in Venice Square and other beautiful ports.
Our lives are full of beautiful events and memories and Mitch will be sorely missed.  Have attached a few photos of George's proudest moments with his bro!

"Mitch" was one of the first people we met when we joined Montclair Campers! As campouts went by, Mitch seemed to be the spiritual leader of the group. Before we ate it was Mitch who said "grace." He also initiated members into the club! "My great Aunt Sally..." always produced confusion and laughs for all the people being initiated! 

I never saw the sentimental side of Mitch until one day...after having fought cancer for a good while...he told me how grateful he was that God had blessed him with a loving wife. "I don't know how she puts up with me , but I am so glad she does!" 

We will always remember him for the fun he added to the campouts. Our hearts and prayers go out to Joanie and the rest of his family...

I have been blessed to have two sets of parents; Mom & Dad Mitchell's, unconditional love and support was unmeasurable.    Capture those moments, don't look back and dwell, thrust forward and know that the family and friends that you surround yourself are a testament of the life you lead. I learned all about Mitch by working with Joan at the City; I learned what a great dad, grandpa, Marine and friend he was and what stood out most was how much he loved his family and even through the cancer, always upbeat.

We love you and your family, you are the friend of my dad and we miss you all ready.

I didn't know Mitch as long as the boys but always enjoyed our visits together. Grief is so hard during the holidays, but Mitch is looking down on us smiling remembering all the great times , his family , friends and so many memories. My God bless you and your  family this holiday season.

Mitch was my Dad's best friend.  Plain and simple.  And from their friendship came childhood memories I will have forever.  Camping/Hunting/Fishing/Monday Night Football get togethers.  All of us (Mom, Dennis, Joanie, Lo Lo, Eileen, Bud, and Mike) are lucky and thankful that they had such a special bond.  I have always loved "Mr. Mitch" as Pops would say.  And I always will.  Peace, Love, Health, Family, Happiness!  What else is there?  Nuttin :-)

Notre Dame was our connection.  We both loved it when they won and felt the pain when they lost.  I am sure he will continue to keep an eye on them from up above.  We will miss you Mitch.

I am really going to miss you, Bro.  We have spent over a half of century being brothers, not by blood, but by friendship.  I have so many memories it would be impossible to write them all down.  We sang together, drove together, and together we had to remember where we parked the car the next morning.  I love you guy and because of me you got to spend your life with Joanie. We took care of each other, now who is going to take care of me?

It's very rare you come across a man as devoted to his family and country as Mitch was.  The last time I saw Mitch he was visiting from California and was feeling a bit under the weather.  When I walked into the house he stood up from the couch, gave me a hug, and asked me how I was doing.  "What's up boy?"  His question was genuine.  Despite his illness and hard fight with cancer Mitch just rarely thought of himself.  I will remember him as selfless man built on a foundation of principle and honor.  I think we all strive to be half the man that Mitch was.  I will miss him tremendously.

I think back of all the memories we had together, poker games, chess games and watching American Band Stand at the ammo dump.  The time we had the load of 7 tons of 30 Caliber blanks in less than 2 hours so we could go back and go on liberty.  But of all the memories of Mitch and I going on an ammo run and all we had was a grid coordinates which we read wrong and ended up behind the rifle range at Camp Pendelton and all firing had to be stopped until we got out from behind the targets. I was senior man I and was chewed out by the Colonel in charge but we still had to deliver the ammo.  We proceeded to drive down the road in a light fog and we ended up on the top of the hill with no roads anywhere in sight.  Mitch decided to drive in reverse while I got out and guided him down the hill and all I could think of all the paperwork I would have to fill out if he crashed.  Mitch and I had talked about it many times and still had not figured out how we got on top of tht hill.  Needless to say we didn't deliver the ammo.  When we got back to the ammo dump Warren Officer Atkins and Staff Sgt. John Richard were waitig for us.  Boy did we get chewed out.  I sure miss the times and the man.  Love him.  Moose

Mitch reminded me so much of Ray.  They were both such honorable men who loved their family and their country.  I will miss seeing seeing him and Joan on their visits to Buddy and Monica. Rest in peace Mitch, job well done.

I am lucky enough to have married into the Mitchell family by way of my sister. But Mitch always treated me as if I had been the one who actually married in, always a hug and a smile. I never realized how many "Mitchisms" I've inherited by way on his influence on my sister's life and through that to me. Grateful to be a part. He will be missed.

This man is a hero and someone that was looked up to by many. The tragedy that happen is unfortunate to say the least, but is what we know as "life". In Heaven God is using him as a significant angel and one day, I and many others will once again be able to shake his hand in the kingdom of Heaven.

To the family and close friends of Mitch, please know that you are all in my prayers. Mitch was special to my heart and and many others. I was lucky to know a great man like him. Rest in peace Mitch! I love you!

Joan - I just went through all the pictures in the gallery.  You and Mitch had such an amazing life together.  You are a beautiful and strong woman - and you have such a wonderful family and so many great friends.  I though Mitch's funeral was exceptional - so much love in that chapel. We went to High School together.  As freshmen we played on the football team.  After the first week Mitch was moved up to the JV to play fullback.
Growing up in Indiana wasn't easy.  I am so proud of Mitch he wanted a better life for himself.   Moving to CA and meeting Joan was the smartest thing he ever did.  He had so many friends, everyone loved Mitch.  What a
great family, we had so many good times together.  We will miss him and ours trips back to Indiana to eat Pizza at John/s

No words can express the sadness in our hearts from losing our dear friend Mitch.  We met Mitch and Joan several years ago and the four of us instantly hit it off. We have shared many wonderful times together such as camping, dinners, playing cards, the casino, St. Patrick's Day party, and many more. Al says Mitch always said that "he was the luckiest man on earth", but Al says he was lucky to have met Mitch.  They had a special bond and Al feels he has lost his "Best Buddy".  Joan knows we love her and will be here for her. May you know that we loved you Mitch and will always have fond memories of the times we shared together. May you rest in peace, our dear friend.

I had the privilege of working with Mitch.  Mitch loved his family & life.  He lived life to the fullest.  I also had the honor of meeting Joan & his kids.  Mitch, Joan & his children made me feel welcome & I will never forget that.  I will always remember the fond memories from working with him.  RIP.

It's never easy loosing a friend/loved one, but we will never see the likes of Mitch again.  He was truly one of a kind.  We never know why people come into our lives but we feel lucky to be able to call him our friend.  We will always toast to Mitch on St. Patty's Day.

For over 52 years, Mitch has been like a brother to me.  He and my late husband Chuck, were best buddies and now they are together having a blast  on the "other side" I hope!  All those years, through camping, hunting, fishing, Vegas/Laughlin, the race track and the ponies, the parties, RV journeys, family celebrations, kids and grandchildren, were times that greatly enriched our life's experiences. We were always glad we 'got to see him' and grateful he considered us "family" - I join the many others who will think of him and remember the joy, laughter and yes, the agrivation he sometimes brought into our lives. Mitch was lucky and grateful to have his bride, Joanie, by his side helping and loving him all these years. We will always miss him and Chuck, but thankful they were the most important part of our lives.

Our most favorite man in the world.  He loved life and loved his family and friends..  He will surely be missed by many.  I know God just needed one more angel..He was here to show us not to give up and be strong for others.  May he be remembered for the fun loving guy he was and the strength for others. My thoughts and prayers are with the Mitchell family over the loss of Mitch. As a former Bayer pharmaceutical employee from CT, I had the extreme pleasure to work and play several rounds of golf with Mitch while working with the Ontario DC. All my Bayer colleagues here in CT loved when Mitch visited the West Haven site for a training class or meeting. Mitch was such a great coworker and it was a pleasure to call him a friend. Again, I speak for all of Mitch's friends from CT when I say that he will be truly missed.

Mitch was a great man and patriot but more importantly a great friend. He will be missed dearly.

We have so MANY fond childhood memories of spending time with the Mitchell family.  Although we kids are all grown up, we still think of your family every Christmas season!  Our hearts are with each of you.  The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass will be offered for the repose of Uncle Mitch's soul on Sunday November 23, 2014 at Santiago De Compostela Catholic Church in Lake Forest at the Noon Mass.
