Dear Liz (Aunt Mary Lou) and your entire family,  what a loving gesture to treasure forever. Not only can I think of your "Dad" just by closing my eyes and taking that time but now I can open up this memory book and read about Uncle Guero. He's unforgettable, a fellow Moon Child  and such a good husband and father. I love you all and think of you often.

Not very often does one have an opportunity to meet a truly great man.  Lupe I feel you are one.
A few years ago, Tom Brokaw wrote a book about The Greatest Generation.  It was about all those persons born in the 1920's and raised in the Depression.  How they grew up through the Second World War, the sacrifice's they made, the hardships they endured and the contributions they made to our country, society and other persons.  Lupe was one of those persons.  
He matured knowing the value of hard work and where it could take him.  He, his brothers and sisters were taught important character traits like honesty, church, family and friends.  That is how he lived his life.  He carried those characteristics throughout his entire life and taught them to his children and grandchildren (not so much with his words but through his actions).
He was a quiet man and never tried to impose his personal feelings about the world or politics on anyone else.  He just went about his life quietly dealing with things he could control or impact.  
He was generous with his family but still taught the value of thrift.  He was loving to his family but through his own actions taught them the rewards that hard work could bring.  His greatest joy was to spend time around his family and friends.
In his passing and after previewing hundreds of photos there are a few that really stood out in my mind. (1) a picture of him in greasy coveralls working on the asphalt truck shows his work ethic (2) a photo of him in the backyard with his dog Trampie, his tender side and love for animals (3) reading the paper in the morning at the kitchen table, intelligent and quietly aware of the world around him (4) sitting on the patio at the Condo in Rosarito watching the waves and surfers, enjoying the fruit of his & Mary Lou's hard work (5) the photo of the entire family around the red appliance truck, unity of the family he and worked so hard for.
Lupe never had a hobby but he knew how to have a good time.  He was his happiest at family gatherings as well as annual golf tournaments in Mexico.  He was always the honored guest and he loved it.  He loved talking to friends and dancing.  He just had a great time.
Lupe will be forever in my mind.  His absence has been felt by all.  I think he will continue to be ever present at all family functions.  In my heart, I know that he would want to us all to continue on with our lives and live by his example.  It would be a better world if we were all like Lupe.

Dearest Mary Lou, Hanna, and family:
When ever we girls would come to your home in these past many years we were always greeted with loving and kind open arms. You always made us feel like a part of your family. Lupe always had made sure that his home was a safe harbor for all who were there. His presence when we now come to the home is greatly missed. I remember his curiosity of my career path. Lupe's excitement about news of the adventures, which I and my twin daughters, had with his beloved Hanna. Again I shall say this, “there will never come a day that Hanna and Mary Lou will not be in the care of just their family but also from we three girls”. They are in our hearts these many years and will remain there in safe keeping, now that you are gone to the Lord Lupe. Even when you did not know the events of our lives you and Lupe's love and support in just being a good listeners was a great comfort to me, and of course the hugs always were a good send off as well. Lupe and you have treated my twin daughters Amber and Alexandria as you did your Hanna. And I'm still grateful for this, as we have no family in California to take on the role you two supplied, for the girls, to witness just what love can come from having Grandparents.
I have learned so much from you Mary Lou, your second brain, when mine seemed to be failing me. Even in your worst hours you seen the pain in me, and still took time out of your own to guide and comfort me through the worst days of my life. You are so right, we are way too much alike, and it is more like we are sisters, from another mother. Remember, no matter what life brings, we girls are here for you and yours, as you have been here for me and my girls. Much love to all of you dearest friends. Sincerely. Before our Lord Jesus Christ called for you, you said to me," I love you honey, it's time you go your way and I go my way." When you patted me on my arm and tightened my hand, a sense of happiness, inner peace and strength filled my soul. For the first time neither fear nor self-centeredness clouded my eyes or blocked my heart, for it was my turn to demonstrate my love to you. Although painful and difficult, I knew I had to let you go. It comforted me to know that deep in my heart and soul I knew you were not leaving me, but you were setting me free to finish my own journey of life. I knew it was difficult for you to do so because you had always loved, sheltered and protected me.

Prior to you leaving to our Lord, I did not recognize how much fear, self-doubt and selfishness I held within my heart. By letting you go into the Hands of God, I finally learned the true meaning of unconditional love. When we love unconditionally, we love with our entire heart and expecting and wanting nothing in return. We love only with the desire for complete happiness and freedom for the person whom we love, no matter how near or far they are. When unconditional love takes place, that is when we experience true happiness, strength and inner peace within our hearts and it will forever reside and flourish within our souls.

Thank you Grandpa for being the kind of man you lived to be. Thank you for helping me to recognize the type of person that God wants me to be. It was through your unwavering love, kindness and good acts that helped me to learn that love is neither expecting, binding nor demanding, but rather the free giving of the heart and soul. You never faltered in your love and in your duties as man, husband, father and grandfather. I will strive daily to do the same as a daughter, granddaughter, sister, citizen of the world and hopefully one day a wife. I will always remember and be forever grateful for the beautiful memories and life's lessons you gave to me. For demonstrating to me throughout your life the true meaning of unconditional love. Even though you may no longer be physically here with me, I know your never ending love and faith in me will always protect and guide me throughout my life.

How do you pick a few words to describe our Dad. The ones that come to mind are:

Hard Working: He was always working at his business & at the same time making his investments and maintaining the apartments.
Generous: Not only were our Christmas stockings filled every year, but I recently heard stories that Dad lent a hand to those he cared about with physical, financial and emotional support.
Loving & Caring: Dad was a man who loved his family and would have done anything for us.
Simple: He never cared to be in the lime light or to be the center of attention.
Strict: Dad raised his voice at us kids when we got in trouble, but it helped shape us into the adults we are today...of course, being the baby, I got away with EVERYTHING! 
One fond memory is when mom and dad would make that call to sing "Happy Birthday" to you....I will miss that call.
On behalf of my family, I would like to thank you all of you for being here tonight.
I would like to thank Anna and Breanna for all their support...the girls at Nightingale's and Hospice....to Chana, for being there for my mom & dad...my brothers for all they've done...to my sister for being my dad's "Florence Nightingale"....and to my Mom, for her strength & for being my dad's "Suggie Bear" for 66 years.

I have so many happy memories of my Grandpa.  A few weeks ago I was talking to a friend and they called me "Deli" and I began to cry.  "Deli" was a nickname my Grandpa gave me when I was little and not many people have called me that since.  I took comfort in knowing that every single day I'll get small reminders of my Grandpa like I did this day when my friend called me "Deli".  I feel so happy and blessed to have known such a wonderful man.  He taught us all so much and loved all his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  Words can't describe how much I'll miss him but I know he'll always be with us and we'll always remember him especially when my family gathers together.

So many happy memories flash through my mind of your Dad, your Mom, you, Uncle Lolo and the house on Hope St..  We send love and prayers to you and your family.  The Rosary Service was beautiful.

My dad passed away on Jan. 6th 2012, el dia de los tres Reyes , y ahora son cuatro Reyes.
Our dad who came from humble beginnings was the most tenacious person I knew. His goal was to make sure that his family would not have to struggle like he did and for us to alter future generations to come. To him, it wasn't " my way or the highway", it was " my way or my way".
Our family became strong because of him he taught us ethics, integrity, hard work and most of all, family values.
He was able to find his soulmate, my mom, and together they were the perfect team. He loved his wife, children and adored his grandchildren.
That team that my mom and dad created, that foundation,  will forever have his hands imprinted on them.
Our dad's last days were not easy, always used to being in control, always a giver, now he had to receive.
But the one thing I'm thankful for was that our family was together for his last minutes on earth and we thank you God for giving our family that opportunity.
May God bless you as you take your place in Heaven with our Lord and Tata and Mama Tita.
You will forever be missed. Our hearts are bruised and hurting but in time we will realize that life goes on and that we will continue to practice all the good things you taught us.
I will look forward for my birthday every year, so I can hear you and the Angels sing happy birthday to me.
You will always be in our hearts and prayers.

Boys are born.  Men are made.  But great men are celebrated.  We celebrate the life of a great man.  My grandfather was not great because of his fame.  He was not famous.  Or for whom he knew, because he preferred the company of simple, genuine, descent people.  He was great because he did not need to be great to be content.

He knew the value of work from the time he was a small boy picking fruit up and down the central valley until cleaning silverware, piece by piece, in my grandparent's kitchen, too old to do much else.  He mostly worked for himself knowing failure and success rested on him alone.  He worked very hard in all he did but when work was done for the day it was time to rest.  I don't know anyone who mastered rest better than my grandpa.  I suppose the reason is because his work was without question, hard and honest.

He never had a hobby or took up a sport.  He didn't see the point.  There was one time however that we convince him to play in Uncle Pat's golf tournament.  He won top prize for the worst golfer, shooting 187, a record that still stands today.  My grandfather retired from the game figuring there was nothing left for him to prove.

My grandfather was incredible wise with money.  I can remember him showing me a saving account book.  There were deposits of two cents, four cents, and a nickel at a time.  Because of his hard work and diligent managing of money he became a successful businessman.  What my grandpa considered wise spending my grandma sometimes considered cheap.  That's between them.  But one thing is certain; they never lacked for anything and always had enough to be generous.

My grandpa was unassuming.  You would never know he was successful.  He never needed to wear his money.  All grandpa needed was a pair of brown work pants and a grey sweatshirt.  Why buy a Rolex when a Timex would do.   

I don't ever recall him bragging about anything.  Except one time when I was a little boy I was having dinner at my grandparent's.  Grandpa came home, grubby, smelling of work, a fist full of pink receipts and a smile on his face.  "Mom, Mom," as he called my grandma, "I did it!"  Excited to share his achievement with grandma and now with the rest of us he continued to say he made more in one day of hauling asphalt then he had ever done.  I did not consider this bragging or showing off.  He was simply sharing a joy with his family he loved.  

He never offered advice unless asked.  And whenever you went to him for anything he didn't always give you what you wanted but he always gave you what you needed.  

There are only a few people I consider who profoundly shaped my life, one is without question my grandpa.  If I could be half the man he was in this life I would consider it a great blessing from God.  I thank Jesus for creating my grandpa.  I thank Jesus for saving him.  I thank Jesus for taking him home to be with Him for all eternity.  I thank Jesus for choosing me to be my grandpa's grandson.  With Love,

He seemed happy to tell me.  He was a very young man.  With my wife we worked very hard.  He smiled and said, "She can work like a man."  And we both laughed, but he showed alot of love for you in that moment and I will never forget him.  I hope you are well.

To the Bestest Father in Law a girl could ever ask for. It was an Honor to be one of your daughter in laws. You were a strong, tough and in control man who loved his family....and yet such a simple man. I will never forget when you went to buy Mary Lou her Mercedes at Metro Mercedes in Mtcl & the young, not so smart, sales kid would not even give you the time of day since you looked like a bum just coming from work in your dirty pants & shirt....Little did he know you had the down payment for that Benz in cash in those dirty trousers...Good lesson on never judging a man by his clothes  :-) Also, thank you for teaching me how to keep my dollar bills in order....all the faces going the same directions...bills from small to big....I still do that to this day and always will....I just hope one day I have lots of "big faces" like you did. I love you and will miss you.

Dan and I (Silvia Lopez Krespan), would like to add this picture of Guero and Mama Tita to your collection.  Some time ago, my daddy Chevy, shared with me that this picture is of the "Guadalupana" mothers and their sons, of Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Ontario, prior to entering the service for WWII.  A good friend of mine (Rick Franco) and I, discovered our families had the same picture.  With the help of his parents, he was able to name some of the moms and some of the men.  My daddy was able to assist Rick in completing the names.  What a beautiful memory for all of the Lopez family!
