

John also known as Johnny was born Geneva, IL 07/02/1945 to John Hays Hammond and Lillian Marie Stroberg Hammond. He had an older sister Mary and two younger sisters Ruthie and Margie. He lived in several states growing up and finally moved to California in 1960. He graduated Newport Harbor high in 1963. After graduation John enlisted in the Navy. He proudly served from 10/01/1964 to 09/30/1970. His ship was called the USS Ticonderoga. After he was honorably discharged from the Navy he went to Chaffey College where he met the girl he would later marry, Susan Marie Flynn. John and Susan married on 08/28/1971. They raised two children together Julie and William (Billy). They also had another child John, that unfortunately died at birth.
John did graduate with an Associate’s degree from Chaffey college in 1972 and then went on and took some classes at Cal Poly. John spent most of his later working years at Libbey Glass factory as a machinist.
John was a great storyteller he could talk for hours. He had a good sense of humor and was often silly when interacting with his grandchildren when they were little. He loved reading of all kinds, especially history. He was a big history buff and loved to share his knowledge with others. John enjoyed watching movies and playing cards. John loved to eat some quirky things. One was a piece of cherry pie with gravy and another was cheeseburgers with strawberry jelly.
Over the last 10 years he enjoyed hanging out doing activities with his neighbors and friends. John also loved to take long walks in the park with his favorite dog Zack. Most of all John loved his children and grandchildren dearly. John was very proud to be a vet and to have served his country. He leaves behind a daughter, a son, 8 grandchildren and 2 sisters. He was loved by his family and friends and will be missed by many.
