

Bobby Johnson, 80, of Van Buren, formerly of Torrance, CA, passed away Friday, September 19, 2014 in a Fort Smith hospital. He was born February 24, 1934 in Barling. He was a graduate of Fort Smith High School, and served his county for 8 years in both the Army and Navy. While stationed in Japan, Bob studied art at The Institute of Art in Sasebo, Japan. He studied drawing, oil painting, and sculpting. His instructor referred to him as “Mr. Bob” and since then, all his completed work was signed “Mr. Bob”. He was an accomplished artist who worked for several years in various industries such as toy development, U.S. Mint coining, jewelry manufacturing, tool and die, and as an engraving instructor. He was well known for being a versatile artist who could switch from one art form to another. Bob also continued his education and obtained an engineering degree. Prior to his retirement, he spent seventeen years working as an engineer in the aerospace industry in California.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Adele Gross, and a brother, Jimmy Guest.
He is survived by his companion of 28 years, Bernie Melchionne of Torrance, CA; a brother, Van Lawson of Mountainburg; a cousin, Pam Guthrie of Van Buren; and two nieces, Sabrina Landers and Dana Smith.
Graveside service will be 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 23, 2014 at Alma Cemetery, under the direction of Edwards Van-Alma Funeral Home of Van Buren, AR.
The family will visit with friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday, September 22, 2014, at Edwards Van-Alma Funeral Home, 4100 Alma Highway, Van Buren, AR.
