Losing gong gong has taught me many things.

For one, we are not losing him as he is now forever with us in our memories, his many stories he has left us with (truthful or exaggerated) and the imprint he has made on each of our hearts.

I’ve learned that taking care of your elders is very important. No matter how busy life gets always try to set aside time for your family. 

I’ve also learned to not take the time that we have with our loved ones for granted. Time on earth is precious and the way that we use it is so important.

Lastly I have learned to make sure that your loved ones know that they are loved and let them know how important they are to you, for life is short and any one of us could be taken by God’s will at any moment.

These are the most important things my grandfather has taught me and I will be eternally grateful. 

I love you gong gong, I hope you’re enjoying heavens curry chicken, salmon sashimi and of course your favourite mango cake alongside our loving mama.

Listing every memory I have of you would be impossible because I've lived with you my entire life. I know your daily routine, your good and bad habits, and your kind and generous heart. Although I wish I could enjoy your favourite foods with you one more time, hug you one more time,  and tell you "I love you" one more time, I know that you're in heaven now. I'm relieved that you can finally rest peacefully instead of enduring earthly suffering. I cannot thank you enough for everything you've provided for me, the love you gave me and all your grandchildren, and the lessons you've taught me. You showed me what unconditional love is, so now I can show others what unconditional love is. I hope you're enjoying yourself up there with Mama, and I look forward to the day we meet again.

Remembering the bright jolly days in Marine Parade, with your passion for photography and gadgets, to the later years when you would visit Singapore with Ma Ma, and go for long walks at MacRitchie, meet countless friends and share about everything with warmth, energy and a smile on your face, till the final years, when you got to meet your great-grandchildren, and shared your gratitude  and quieter passions, showing us what it means to have a thankful heart, and to find joy in your daily activities. I remember you best with that warm delightful smile on your face, with a story or re-count on your lips. You are much loved and missed, and we rejoice knowing that we will one day see you in Heaven. 

My Dearest Gong Gong,

I had the privilege of growing up with you and mama my entire life. Growing up with you both taught my sisters and I so much about how to show love; through my parents actions towards you, and through your actions towards us. 

We are blessed to have been able to create memorable daily rituals with you. Like the times when I used to work late at night and you would come down for your nightly coffee, and you would say “wah, so late, still working hard?” And when I would come in to check in on your PD sessions and you would tell me your grand stories of your past; I’ve probably heard those stories more than anyone in our family, some of them more than once. But I knew how happy it made you to be able to tell them, so I would sit and listen every time, despite having heard them before. Thank you for your constant encouragement to pursue my passions. You would always ask “how’s business? Did you sell a lot this week?” or tell me “use my cameras to take photos at dinner!” You showed your love for us in your own way, and I will always appreciated it. 

Having been by your side for the last 26 years has been a blessing. My heart was broken when I had to say goodbye to you before my trip, knowing that I would probably never see you on earth again. However, I know that you are now pain-free in heaven, and together with Mama, and are both looking after us from above. 

I will always love you both very much.

I was privileged to work with Alfred Lee PC for many years before his retirement.  I remember visiting him in his apartment in Marine Terrace. Alfred served me a Cai Tou kueh warmed by him in his microwave oven. 
Beside this kueh, Alfred shared with me, many stories of his youth when he help his Aunty in her provision shop. 
In the office he have always look out for me and we enjoyed a companionship only good friends can be proud of.  
He used to visit Singapore when he was healthier and when he was unable to visit due to his poor health, Alfred will ring me up and we will reminisce old times for as long as 30 minutes.  
Alfred, I will miss your voice and May the Good Lord grant you, Eternal Rest. 

My dearest Gong Gong, it was the greatest blessing to have lived right next to your bedroom my whole life. I heard you through every groan, snore, laugh, sleep-talk, and beep from your machine, from a little girl to a young adult just a few months ago when we all lived at Auntie Vivien and Uncle Bernard's place. I loved waking up to you at the breakfast table, with a big smile, never failing to wish me a "Good Morning Therise" and always found comfort in your words "Goodnight Therise" and your concern asking "Is Louisa home? Is Saphia home?" late at night. I will never forget the times my sisters and I would dress up in costumes so you could take photos of us in the media room. Or the many mornings we would wake up to the loud booming of your voice singing karaoke music. Or the times when I would massage you and Mama's back while you watched Chinese dramas. Your passion for photography has enabled us to relive many joyous moments as a family, from Marine Parade all the way to McLeod Court. You were always there to look out for me and my sisters, every single day. Life without you in it is such a bittersweet and strange feeling, but I know the Lord has brought you home to His Kingdom, an extravagant place I can only imagine how glorious it is. I want you to know how deep and wide our love was, and is for you. You taught me to follow my passion for writing and I will never forget when you read my poems and said, "Therise you write beautifully, not many people do these days." I look forward to the day that we will be reunited so I can listen to your long-adventurous grandfather stories once again, while sharing a bowl of your favourite Mee Siam, or a plate of Fish and Chips from Dave's in Steveston. While my heart is heavy and my tears swell thinking of you, I know you would say to me, "Therise, don't be sad!" So I will continue to stay strong, and most importantly, I will continue to love others, just as you have so vastly, loved me.

Dearest Dad,

All these years, I have been asking you what you like for dinner. In the last few weeks, you decided to stop eating and that is when I begin to feel your absence in my life. I am deeply saddened by your leaving us and will always miss your being around my daily life. You are now with Mum and Jeremy in Heaven watching over us. Will miss you always!
