Mom passed away early Saturday morning, November 19th 2016 with her family at her side.
Mom was born on August 26, 1928, in Vancouver, to Gurdas Singh and Bhani Kaur Johal. She was the second eldest of eleven, and is survived by her siblings Bachan, Paje, Jeet, Dee and Dave; her children Charan (Carl), Vicky (Eric), Hardave, and grandson Travis; she was predeceased by our father P.S. Gill.
A long time Richmond resident Mom made her home a center for family and community, including the Lansdowne racetrack family.
Mom was a respected leader in both the East Indian community and the City of Richmond. Her careers ranged from being a translator for Canadian Immigration and CP Air at the Vancouver Airport, a clinic assistant with the Richmond Health Department, and an Owner/Breeder of Thoroughbreds and cashier at Exhibition Park racetrack. Although Mom had to leave school in grade 10 to help her family, her true calling could have been a lawyer, doctor or mechanical engineer.
Mom was a hard working innovative renaissance woman with her own set of tools! She baked cakes, mended fences, roofed the house and cheered for the Canucks. She was known as Mom, Gram, Sister, Auntie, Chachi Ji, Great Grandma, Betty G and friend.
At Mom's request there has been a private cremation. A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday December 4th from 2 to 5pm at Richmond City Hall.
In lieu of flowers a donation to the Children's Hospital would make Mom happy.
