It is with deep sorrow and profound love that we announce the passing of Barbara Joan (Asserlind) Marshall, a cherished wife, devoted mother, beloved grandmother, and treasured friend. She peacefully departed from this world on June 14, 2026, at the age of 85.
Born on February 28th, 1941, in Vancouver, BC, Barbara was the daughter of the late Hazel and Herb Asserlind, who instilled in her a legacy of kindness and resilience. Barbara's journey began in the vibrant city of Vancouver, where she graduated from Van Tech Secondary in 1959. Shortly thereafter, she met the love of her life, Douglas, with whom she shared an extraordinary bond. Barbara and Doug were married on October 12, 1963, embarking on a remarkable marriage that flourished for 62 beautiful years. Together, they nurtured a loving family, bringing up their two sons, Jeffrey and Craig, with unwavering love and support.
Barbara's career path initially led her to serve the City of Vancouver. However, her greatest joy was found in dedicating herself full-time to motherhood, where she poured her heart into raising her sons. She was also an active member of her church, singing in the choir and serving as a volunteer throughout the years. As her children grew, she embraced a new career as a tour guide, where her passion for travel became an avenue to share joy and discovery with others. Barbara's love for travel, often shared with Doug and their close friends, painted her life with rich experiences and lasting memories.
Known for her kind and accepting nature, Barbara was a beacon of warmth in the lives of everyone she touched. She had a unique gift for noticing the small things, making everyone around her feel seen and appreciated. Her awareness of the latest fashion trends began early and lasted her entire life. She fondly spoke of her going away outfit for her wedding day, a “ruby red Italian knit 3-piece suit with black pattern pumps and purse, 16 button French kid gloves, and a black fur hat from Paris”. This attention to detail can be seen in photos through the eras of her life. Her baking, a delightful expression of her love, was savored by family and friends alike, adding sweetness to countless gatherings and celebrations.
Barbara's legacy is carried forward by her devoted husband, Douglas, and their cherished sons, Jeffrey (Heather) and Craig (Beth). Her nurturing spirit and gentle wisdom live on in her grandchildren, Nicholas, Kylie, Zoe, and Brodie, who were the light of her later years.
In remembrance of Barbara, her family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Columbus Residence, who provided excellent care in her final weeks. Their kindness and dedication brought comfort and peace to Barbara and her family during a challenging time.
As we bid farewell to this remarkable woman, let us celebrate the life she lived with grace, humility, and unconditional love. Barbara's spirit will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew her, continuing to inspire love and kindness in their lives.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to a charity of your choice in Barbara's name. Rest in peace, dear Barbara. You will be deeply missed and forever loved.
