Barbara Preston

IN THE CARE OF

Mount Pleasant Universal Funeral Home

PRESTON, Barbara Elizabeth (née Bonser)

Barbara Preston passed away with family by her side on June 8, 2025, at the age of 72. Born in Toronto on December 2, 1952 into a lively household, she was the middle child of Bernard and Helen Bonser, and from an early age, showed the sharp mind, fierce independence, and dry humour that would become her signature.

She is lovingly remembered by her husband and best friend, John Preston; her children, Heather (Curtis) Schaefer and Michael (Summer) Preston; and her treasured grandchildren, Caleb (Haley) Binder and Erica Binder. She will also be deeply missed by her sister, Deborah; her sisters- and brothers-in-law, Darlene, Sandy (Brian), Doreen, and Harvey; her nieces and nephews, David (Catherine), Darren (Michelle), Mark (Maryanne), Gregory, Lisa, David, Ian (Crystal), Max, and Eve (Tom); and many dear friends, both old and new, throughout Ontario, Alberta, and B.C.— including those from the Vancouver Newcomer Alumni club who brought her laughter and companionship in recent years. She was predeceased by her loving parents, her beloved brother Bryan, and her cherished niece Lara Hudson.

Barb thrived on challenge. She earned her professional accounting designation while raising two young children and working full-time — a feat she accomplished with calm competence and her trademark determination. Later in life, never one to coast, she made a successful leap into real estate, where she brought the same intelligence, humour, and drive that had always defined her.

In retirement, Barb leaned into life as a grandmother, cheerleader, host, and memory-maker. She relished travel with John, a good card game, a glass of wine, and the peaceful rhythm of boats passing by from her favourite perch. She was quick-witted, loyal to the core, and always ready with a clever comeback — but beneath the banter was a heart devoted to the people she loved.

Even as her health declined, Barb's spirit remained unshaken. Attending her grandson’s wedding just weeks ago was a final and fitting testament to her strength, her pride, and her boundless love for family.

The family extends our gratitude to Dr. Marla McKnight and the staff at St. Paul’s Hospital for their exceptional care. In accordance with her wishes, Barb has been cremated. A private family memorial will be held at a later date. If desired, donations may be made to the Salvation Army or to a charity of personal significance.
