Casey was really cool. There’s no other way to say it.

We met at Queen’s, but it was more during the post-grad years that we connected. I was home for the summer studying for my national exams after McGill, and Casey always seemed to be around KGH. In a way, he always will be.. I was always routing for him to be a doctor. A lot of people said they wanted to - but Casey did it.

One memory has stayed with me all these years. My sister came home one day from work and called me - and she said, “There’s this guy who calls me Jade’s little sister.” I remember thinking how very Queen’s that was, and how comforting it felt to know Casey was looking out for her. I took absolute comfort in it. I still do. It brought me so much peace then, and honestly, it still does.

Reflecting on that feeling during a run recently, I realized how much that memory means when I think about Casey - and your family now. The comfort I took years ago from knowing Casey was watching over Bridget is the same comfort I hope you all feel - as Casey feels as he watches over all of you today.

There’s something incredibly beautiful about that. It brings me both joy and comfort in God’s plan.

A small university memory brings me into something much larger and more enduring. He is here still.

Casey was one of the smartest and hardest working people I knew in my time at Queen’s. Finally getting to know one another in fourth year after seeing each other around the rugby pitch for years, we became fast friends and study partners. He was my favourite micro anatomy lab partner but an even better friend with the best make-everything-better hugs. He always had a smile on his face, which became even bigger when he talked about his dog Rigby. I still remember telling him when I got into vet school and he was just so excited and proud. Once he was in his residency we’d share stories and compare the differences between our patients and laugh about some of the (shocking/horrifying) similarities. 

Casey truly was one of a kind - smart, athletic, funny, kind, empathetic, and striving to be the best person he could be while trying to make this tough world a slightly better place. My fourth year at Queen’s truly would not have been the same without you Casey and I’m honoured to have called you a friend since then. Case, I hope you’re at peace now running and playing with Rigby and a bundle of other goldens. Let that bluebird fly 💙

Remembering you on this happy day in 2017, Orientation Day in Emergency Medicine.  Sending my condolences.

Casey and I were friends in elementary school. We had sleepovers and bonded over our love for Pokémon. We stayed in touch throughout high school but hung out a little less as time went on. But I never forgot to (jokingly) remind him of the time he accidentally slammed into me while sliding down an ice hill and chipped my front tooth. I look back on those days  from our childhood fondly. Casey, you are dearly missed. Thank you for the years of friendship. Sending my heartfelt condolences to all family and friends.

I met Casey only a handful of times, yet I always came away impressed by his warmth and kindness. I cannot imagine how difficult his loss has been for those who were lucky enough to know him well. May he rest in peace.

Happy birthday, Casey. You are so very missed.

I went to school with Casey in elementary school starting in Kindergarten, and during our time in the Gifted program, from Grades 3-12. He lived a stone's throw away from me growing up on the next street over. We always bonded over our love for each of our family's golden retrievers . I still remember his golden, Buddy, barking at his backyard fence anytime I would walk by!

I remember Casey as being a caring friend and classmate, often putting the needs of other's before his own. It is only fitting that he went on to be a tremendous Doctor with a wonderful bedside manner who truly cared for his patients and colleagues, as from what I have read. His love for and kindness towards others is evident in every post that has been beautifully written on this page. 

He was smart, athletic, and funny. Always admired by all of his 'giftie' classmates... and by the new friends he made in high-school and eventually university, as all of us branched out into our own circles and walks of life.

On January 19 I lost my best friend and brother. Casey and I lived together in university and bonded over our long late night conversations as we sat in the kitchen. Casey was wonderful to talk to, he always made me feel like the most interesting person in the world. Even 13 years later, Casey and I enjoyed talking most days, calling most recently on Christmas Day.

Casey came to be the big brother I never had.

Our friendship was filled with shared coming-of-age moments. I walked Casey to his medical school interview. Casey came to my master’s degree graduation. Years later when my career moved me to Germany and I needed a new diploma, Casey was there in Kingston liaising with the registrar’s office on my behalf. We spoke about the people we loved and of our heartbreaks. 

There are so many things I want to say about Casey. 

Casey was kind. He gave great hugs. He loved Calvin and Hobbes. He was smart. He was fiercely loyal and funny; he always made me laugh. 

Casey was also generous and deeply thoughtful. After his medical school interview he asked me to help him pick out a gift for his professor (as thanks for supporting his medical school application). As we walked out of the store Casey handed the gift basket to me and said “this is for you — you’re a great friend.”

I will never have another friend like Casey. Every day I feel his absence, and my heart will forever have a hole in his place.

The photo shared is from 2016 ;  one of two times Casey invited me to his family cottage. He loved it there and it’s where I most want to remember him. I remember him asking me “Do you think this is the most beautiful sunset in the world?” I said I didn’t know, but maybe! Casey responded he was certain it was. We swam all day, talked about our girlfriends, jobs, sports, and the lives we were going to have. It was a perfect day. I always thought we would come back here. I miss you so much. I wish I could live this day with you one more time. I love you Casey.

I had the pleasure of being Casey’s grade 6 teacher.  He was one of the nicest kids and I have always wondered where he would land in  life. I see through his friends and family that he continued  to be kind, loving and truly cherished by all who knew him. To Carson and Andra, I remember you both also and send my deepest condolences and prayers.  Your boy was lovely and will never be forgotten.

Casey was smart, hilarious, witty, easy to talk to and the life of the party. High school would not have been the same without our fond memories together.

I was deeply saddened to hear of Casey’s passing. Although it has been a couple of years since we last worked together at the pain clinic, he crossed my mind often, most recently just a few weeks ago, and I always hoped he was doing well.

Casey was a resident when I was the charge nurse, and during our time working together, it was clear that he had a rare ability to make people feel truly seen and valued. Despite his own struggles, he made it a point to listen, to connect, and to ensure that whoever he was speaking with felt important. He would stop by my office every morning to say good morning and sit for a few minutes of conversation, and those small moments left a lasting impression.

I will always be grateful for the care he provided to my father during a medical emergency. I remember telling him afterward that he was an amazing physician, and I meant it wholeheartedly. Even during his relatively short time at the clinic, he left a meaningful impact on the staff, and he was spoken of often, even long after he left.

The last time I saw Casey was on his final day at the clinic. Before leaving, he came into my office and gave me a hug, one I will never forget and will always cherish. I truly hope he knew how much he was cared for and how deeply he touched the lives of those around him.

Wherever he may be now, I hope he has found peace. Casey was a wonderful person, and his memory will stay with me always. Thank you for being you, Casey.

As a close friend through childhood, our teenage years and  adulthood, I’ve been fortunate to have known Casey most of my life.  

Casey was one of the most brilliant, kind, and genuinely funny people anyone could hope to know. His passing leaves the world feeling smaller, quieter, and unmistakably less bright.

I’ll always miss you my dear friend, I hope you found your peace.

I was absolutely dumbfounded when I heard of Casey's passing. My heart goes out to the whole Petrie family.

I remember in the course of the many hours spent as a kid hanging out with Gavin the little hilarious jabs he and his brother would exchange, blocking the stairs till we figured out some science riddle or some other jest. 

while I didn't know him all that well, I was still proud to even tangentially know someone who accomplished so much in so few years.

It is with profound sadness that we are conveying this condolence. 
Although we only had the pleasure of meeting Casey on a few occasions during his teen years, we feel that we knew him well. How you might ask? It was through the countless descriptions of his progress, both academically and in sports, that were shared by his incredibly proud father. 
Our thoughts and prayers are with you Carson, Andra and Gavin! May the many wonderful memories you have of Casey comfort you during this time of extreme loss!

I first met Casey at a Pain Medicine event when I had just got into the program.  As a fellow emerg person we hit it off right away.  He was so welcoming and friendly.  I will always remember our chats about lifting, sports and life in medicine. He was always such a kind a person like a gentle giant.   He will be missed.

I had the pleasure and privilege of working with Casey over the years during his Pain Medicine Residency at UBC. He was one the most kind, caring and compassionate individuals I had ever met. Our patients always spoke highly of him and felt heard and understood with him.  He touched people's lives in more ways you can imagine. I will miss you my friend. Rest in peace.

I first met Casey my first day at Queen’s, arriving early to train for rugby, nervous and unsure like most Frosh. Casey immediately introduced himself and put me at ease - he had that gift. He always made you feel genuinely special. 

I’ll always remember his huge smile, his energy and the warm “Hey Sawarna” every time he saw me. I’m grateful to have known him and my heartfelt condolences go out to all who loved him.

Saddened to hear of Casey’s passing. Casey was my roommate and close friend during our undergrad years at Queen’s. He was always optimistic, cheerful, and a joy to be around. Incredibly bright, he understood things faster than anyone else — during exam season you'd often find him at the gym or relaxing because he already knew the material inside and out. He excelled in athletics just as much as academics, and he was a proud member of the Queen’s rugby team. The world has lost an exceptional human being. I was very saddened to hear of Casey’s passing last week and it does feel like the world is a little bit smaller without him in it. We quickly became friends in medical school over small group debates, Queen’s school spirit, and his sharp observational humour; he was a fixture in class, social and sporting events.

I echo the sentiments of others expressed here that he had a deep innate human connection and instinctively reached out and provided support to others.

I will always treasure the trip Casey and I took with Tyson at the end of medical school to Nepal to trek to Everest Base Camp where we mastered the game of 3-player hearts, braved the altitude sickness, ate the same meal 3 times a day (dal bhat and lemon honey ginger tea) and returned with many stories along with various GI and respiratory ailments. 

My thoughts go out to his family and many friends. Thank you for being my friend, forever in our hearts.

I had the privilege of working with Casey while I was a nurse in Kingston. What always stood out to me was his eagerness to help others as a resident, even when it wasn’t a patient he was assigned to. On one particular day as a new nurse, I felt overwhelmed with a patient, Casey overheard me at the nursing desk. Without hesitation, he went out of his way to offer his help and make sure I was okay. 

During one of my last shifts working with Casey, I shared my plans to move to Vancouver. He was so encouraging and spoke warmly about the things he loved most about the city, also sharing his own plans to apply to the Pain Fellowship at UBC. Casey made a genuine effort to get to know everyone he worked with. He will be deeply missed, and I feel grateful to have known and worked alongside him.

I first met Casey in 2011 on the rugby pitch at Queen's. Being an older player/ student/ and employee, initially I had a tough time fitting in due to to such an age gap. I will always remember how Casey would always include me and made me feel welcome and part of the team. We took to each other quickly. Casey was a true gentleman, and was "down to earth",  he would always speak and take the time to acknowledge. I watched him graduate Life Science's, working here in Botterell Hall, and moving onto Medicine. I remember the last time I saw him, walking out from KGH during his residency. He looked so tired that day but came right over to say hi and to see how I was. He had this presence about him that everyone took to. I will always consider Casey a friend of mine. You will be greatly missed brother!

Casey was and always will be an amazing person in my mind. One of the many examples of his compassion towards others stands out to me. The Sunday after Queen’s Rugby formal, he shrugged off the inebriation from the prior evening effortlessly and brought joy to elders suffering from mental health challenges at a Kingston hospital as a recreation facilitator volunteer. He was a bright light in this life and will be a bright light in the next. My deepest condolences to Casey’s loved ones during this difficult time.

Tall, handsome, charming, easy to get along with. Social, easy to smile, unable to leave a room without making you laugh.  In many ways should have been a titan of this world.  If only you could see yourself the way we saw you.

Lives are lost too early.  It’s beyond tragic.  So many good souls lost to unfortunate circumstances.  Have visited this page daily since it formed and it’s obvious how many lives you touched in your short time on this earth.  I wish I could have helped more.  I wish I could have been a better friend.  When it was most difficult, I wish I could have made a difference.

When my cousin was in a devastating accident early in residency, I was standing outside the ICU in my scrubs, trying to balance my work responsibilities with an unimaginable life event. It was like Casey knew I needed someone. He came out of nowhere and didn’t say anything, just looked at my face and gave me the biggest Casey hug, kissed the top of my head, and held me for a while in the middle of the hallway. I don’t even remember if we had a real conversation, but it didn’t matter. Everything that I needed to hear was in that hug, and his reassuring presence. There are thousands of memories I have of Casey from medical school as a fellow class of 2017 graduate, and I’m sure there are countless stories that are similar to this moment, but it was the first thought I had when I learned of Casey’s passing.

I was first introduced to Casey when he was a 1st year resident commencing his pre-hospital ride-outs. I was one of the extremely fortunate paramedics he was assigned to and thereafter began to develop a friendship with. We had very similar personalities, interests and hobbies alike. I looked up to Casey. How could anyone not? He exuded confidence, was an absolute wealth of knowledge, and his presence had the ability to put a smile on your face. In 2020 I started training for triathlons, and it was partially (ok… MOSTLY) because I saw Casey in action at the KTown Triathlon and he made it look easy. That’s when I thought, “Well this sport seems cool, and Casey participates in them, so I should too”. After some time, lots of training and picking his brain, Casey surprised me. He messaged me on instagram asking me if I wanted his Garmin Fenix 5 smartwatch for free. He was always very giving and never asked for anything in return. To this very day I still have and use the watch he gave me. It will always serve as a reminder to me of him and all of his great qualities. Towards the end of his residency I knew he had his internal battles and I tried my best to be supportive of him. I am incredibly remorseful and extend my deepest heartfelt sympathies to his family and loved ones over his loss. I am forever grateful to have met him and call him “friend”. I know you are at peace Casey. Love you buddy.

Casey was the beloved son of Andra Norberg and Carson Petrie and brother of Gavin Petrie.  Casey was a force of nature.  It seems  impossible to convey all that he was in a short memorial note.  
From an early age he was determined to practice medicine to help those most needy.   Casey was greatly appreciated for sharing his extensive medical information whenever he was asked, including by his parents and friends.
The photos and  comments shared here show Casey's love of people, sport, particularly rugby, and of being outside climbing mountains, cycling and photographing his favorite subjects - people, dogs, sunsets, flowers, mountains, ....  He published 2 albums of his amazing flower photos, which he kindly gifted his mother.
Within his strong 6-foot 3-inch physique, Casey was a sensitive and generous young man.  Within his years stress from emergency medical training and practice, and his efforts to make a difference for those in pain, he struggled immensely with depression and PTSD.  Despite seeking respite and various treatments, Casey could not see himself accomplishing his dreams.  He would have made a difference. He will be greatly missed.
There will be no service along with his cremation.  His family requests that in lieu of flowers or gifts, Memorial donations may be made to the Hotchkiss Brain Institute (HBI) Mental Health Research Teams at the Mathison Center Lab under the direction of Dr. Leah Mayo, where they research approaches to mental health and relief of stress. We had many warm summer nights sitting outside  simply enjoying the company of our friends. Laughing over the dumb stories and funny jokes from our shared experiences living as a loving community, learning to be adults in Kingston together. Many long phone calls talking about our days and our shared love of bikes, watches and good food. His smile was infectious and will be remembered with nothing but love for the moments we had and the stories he has left me with that I am lucky to be able to share with our community.

You once told me you chose this picture  of Rigby because he was just looking away up the beach and the wind was blowing his ears. It captured him. There isn’t one photo that could capture who you were, but this one made me think of you. I hope you’re on a beach with Rigby right now, wind blowing and all.

Hikes in the pouring rain, polar bear dipping, emptying the rat trap, racing cardboard boats, swimming across lakes, your answer was always, “yes!”. Missing you and your big heart a lot ♥️

Missing you forever old pal. Your kindness was infectious and your hugs unrivalled. It’s kind of poetic that our first child is due on the day you were born. Sending love.

Throughout medical school, it was always a great day when we got to work with Casey. He brought his incredible dry humour, kindness, disciplined work ethic,  and consistently prepared more than anyone else in the room. He was one of the most driven and caring people in our class. He treated everyone with the utmost respect and empathy, and led by example. We all knew what an incredible emergency physician he would become, and would have trusted him to take care of any of us or our loved ones.  

Outside of school, Casey was an amazing friend. He was thoughtful, caring, and could make you forget whatever you were upset about with one good joke and healthy dose of perspective.  He brought along his magnetic presence, wit, and curiosity everywhere he went. 
On January 19th, the world, the medical community, Queen’s, and our class lost one of its best and brightest. Casey, we all love you and we’ll miss you forever.

Casey will be remembered by many members of the Emergency Medicine community in Kingston as a hard working and dedicated resident whose affable nature endeared him to colleagues. I will most remember his determination in the face of obstacles - his desire to persevere through adversity. Casey, I hope you have found peace. Casey was an emergency medicine physician with subspecialty training in pain medicine, a former varsity rugby athlete, and a respected learner whose strength, compassion, and dedication left a lasting mark on all who knew him. Throughout his training at Queen’s, Casey was known for his tireless work ethic, team spirit, and genuine empathy for patients facing their most vulnerable moments, bringing the same commitment and resilience he showed on the rugby field to his medical practice. His passion for caring for others, mentorship of peers, and quiet generosity of spirit will be remembered with gratitude and admiration. Casey’s passing is a profound loss to his family, friends, former teammates, and the medical community. He will be remembered for the kindness and humanity he brought to every aspect of his life, along with the twinkle in his eye with his mischievous grin.
