David gently passed away from pancreatic cancer and will be lovingly remembered by his wife Kim Boutilier, his brothers Peter (Maria) and Bob (Jody), and his sister Mary Jo Smith (Channing).
David lived a full life, guided by his deep desire for a more equitable society. Building on experience with community economic development and public radio in the United States, David moved to Vancouver, BC in 1999 where he quickly immersed himself in the social enterprise ecosystem.
He was a leader in the development of a supportive ecosystem for social enterprise in Canada as a founder and Chair of the Social Enterprise Council of Canada; Program Manager for Enterprising Non-Profits (ENP), which published the first Canadian Guide to Social Enterprise; a partner in the Social Enterprise Ecosystem Project; a Board Member for Social Enterprise World Forum; and a co-founder of the Social Enterprise Institute. He designed and was a Professor MBA in the Social Enterprise Leadership Program since its inception in 2014 at the University of Fredericton.
He was recognized internationally as a social enterprise and social procurement leader, practitioner, and public policy architect.
David was known for his kindness, generosity, intelligence and vision. Forever a problem solver, David was the ‘go-to’ person for people and organizations across BC, Canada, and beyond. His belief that change is possible never faltered.
An avid runner, world traveller, and sports fan, David was known for his humility, humour, story-telling, curiosity, and most of all, for having hope.
“Our challenge for all of us is what we can bring to the future … maybe this time when we push the rock up the hill, it will go over the top!” – David LePage
