With deep sadness, we announce the sudden passing of Derek Clayton Grant, who died of a heart attack on June 2, 2025, at Vancouver General Hospital.
Derek dedicated his life to education through his work with the Vancouver School Board. He began his career teaching Social Studies at Britannia Secondary, where he led memorable wilderness camping trips that opened up new worlds for his students. Over the years, he taught Social Studies, History, and Law, served as a consultant, co-authored a Law 12 textbook, and later became a vice principal who was respected for his fairness, integrity, and his deep care for students.
In retirement, Derek traveled the world with the love of his life, Georgette, documenting their journeys through his beautiful photography. At home, he wrote his memoir, Island of Dreams, and poured his energy into preserving Vancouver’s educational history through the VSB Heritage Committee, where he served as chair. He was especially proud of helping to create the VSB Archives and Heritage website, making decades of school history accessible to the public.
In recognition of his lasting contributions, Derek received the Superintendent’s Tribute in November 2023.
He will be deeply missed by his wife Georgette, his sons Jason (Rachelle) & Aaron (Kerri), his granddaughters Santana (Ben) & Zakiah (Chase), his extended family, friends, former students, and colleagues around the world.
