

Derek Hum, beloved husband, father, and ‘gong-gong’, passed away peacefully on April 18, 2026 at the age of 81, surrounded by family. He is survived by his wife Mary (nee Mow), son Jason and daughter-in-law Ida, daughter Justine and grand-children Jaxon and Zara, sister Nancy, brother Quon and sister-in-law Barb, and many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, grand-nephews, and cousins, across Canada and Australia. He was preceded in death by his siblings: Super, Roger, Gordon, Elizabeth, and Stanley.
He was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia on November 30, 1944. He spent part of his early childhood in China and then his formative years in Campbellton, New Brunswick. He attended Mount Allison University in Sackville on scholarship, and received a Bachelor of Science with Honours in Mathematics in 1967. He was awarded a Rhodes Scholarship and was the first Canadian of Asian descent to receive this honour. He completed an MA of Politics, Philosophy and Economics from Oxford University (Exeter College) in 1969.
Derek and Mary met in England while he was studying at Oxford and she was travelling the world. They later moved to Toronto, ON while Derek finished his PhD at the University of Toronto in 1972. They raised a family and travelled the world together. They shared a long and happy marriage of 57 years.
Derek was a professor of Economics at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg. He became a recognized expert in social policy, labour market issues concerning immigrants, and guaranteed annual income programs (historic Manitoba Mincome experiment). He has published widely, including seven books and over 100 articles and essays. He received the Rh Institute Award for ‘outstanding contributions to scholarship and research in the social sciences category’.
He was an excellent public speaker, known for his quick wit and engaging stories. He served as emcee for countless Chinese New Year banquets and at the Chinese Pavilion at Folklorama in Winnipeg, MB
A celebration of life will be held this summer. All friends and family are welcome. The event will also be available via live-stream for those who are unable to travel.
The family would like to thank Dr. Du, Dr. Phan, and the entire care teams at Burnaby Hospital and St. Michael’s Centre for their compassionate care.
