uncle, brother and friend to many. His wonderful life spanned 98 years, but ended
with his passing on Aug 6, 2022.
Des was born in Winnipeg on April 22, 1924, the third of four brothers. He left school
after grade 10 in order to help support his family, driving a horse-drawn bread wagon, pumping
gas and selling shoes. His halted formal education did not hold him back, as he joined the
Canadian Airforce and served his country in World War II. After the war, he joined the RCMP
and served in BC, New Brunswick and Alberta. He was distinguished by rising to the rank of
Staff Sargeant before retiring to move to the west coast. After furthering his education, he
went on to a full second career with the Vancouver Stock Exchange, where he retired as a
Vice-President. He had a reputation for honesty, integrity and strong ethics among the Howe
Street business community.
Above all, Des was a family man: devoted to his wife of 66 years, Rose, and a
committed father to his children. He took delight in family gatherings and, as his family grew,
he welcomed all into his warm circle of affection. He gave great hugs, loved to laugh and tell
jokes, and he was a warm host, often blending up fancy drinks for his guests. He had a special
relationship with each of his four grandchildren and was so proud of the people they grew up
to be.
Des is predeceased by brothers John, George and Stewart. He is survived by his wife
Rose, son Chris Harrison (Heather), daughter Kathleen Beaton (Ron), grandchildren Kate,
Rebecca, Sydney and Jeff, great-grandson Jasper, sister-in-law Ann Racich, and many nieces,
nephews and friends.
A Celebration to celebrate Desmond's life will be held at the Richmond Funeral Home at 8420 Cambie Road on Sept 7th, 2022 at 11:00 am, with reception to follow.
