I got to know Douglas when we were both at UBC and members of the Model Parliament Club.  We were involved with a group of political up-and-comers and general hell-raisers.  Youth!   I left Vancouver in 1976 and never moved back, but we have remained in touch ever since, for 40 years, even during my decade living in Germany, by telephone (not email!) and occasional brunches when I was in Vancouver.  Douglas was a congenial ranconteur.  We would talk every month or two on the critical subjects: Canadian politics, US politics, the NHL, the NFL, films and books.  Douglas was an informed observer on all these subjects and others, and was funny, witty, sarcastic but never cynical, and did not succumb to the political paranoia that seems to grip so many of my generation and that makes any discussion with them almost impossible.  I am a bibliophile, Douglas a videophile, while we differed on different subjects we had a lot of overlap.  In these times, such a friend is almost irreplaceable.  He will be missed.
