Gio was one of seven children of the Leung family in Hong Kong. He went to study Engineering at the University of Manitoba in 1966. 1967 was the centennial year for Canadian confederation and there was the Expo 67 World Fair in Montreal. As a summer job, Gio worked on the cross Canada train. When he reached Vancouver, he was captivated by the beautiful coastal scenery which reminded him of the harbour in Hong Kong. Shortly after, he transferred his studies to the University of British Columbia and became a Professional Engineer in 1974. He worked as an electrical engineer until 1995 when he took early retirement.
Gio had many interests in life. After retirement, he concentrated on Taiji and taught many students. He also wrote a book titled “Taijiquan Principles Brought to Light” co-authored by his student and close friend Paul Zuurbier. He was a passionate lover of Classical music, particularly opera. In the last years of his life, he developed a love of fishing, spending many happy hours in the lakes and seashores of the Vancouver area.
Gio is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Esther, daughter Christy (Joseph) and son Mark (Rebeka) and grandson James. He will be missed in this world but all who knew him will always carry him in their hearts.
