Herbert John 'Bert' Ryder

Bert Ryder, 89 yr-old patriarch, passed away peacefully on December 15, 2018 in Maple Ridge, BC. Bert is now reunited with Marie, his beloved wife of 65 years. Bert and Marie, known as the King and Queen of Hearts by their 6 children, 14 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and expected 2 great-great grandchildren, are dearly missed. Bert was born in Penticton, BC, to Jack and Margaret Ryder. The eldest of 13 children, he was hailed a local hero as a teen for saving his siblings from a fire in Kelowna. Bert worked many jobs as a logger, firefighter, trucker in BC and Alberta oil fields, and from 1963-92 as head foreman of the Vancouver ILWU Locals 500 & 514. Bert is remembered by colleagues and family for being wise, hardworking, generous, and a mentor to many. Bert was a lifelong entertainer, who loved to dance, sing, whistle, and play his harmonica, often with his father Jack on mandolin and Marie as vocalist, & kids in the choir. He lived life to the fullest by the motto “work hard, play hard”. Bert was devoted to his wife & family, a loyal friend, leader, storyteller, and patriot. He cared for everyone and Bert was loved by all. Please join us in the Celebration of Bert at Glenhaven Memorial Chapel, 1835 East Hastings Street in Vancouver on Saturday, December 29, 2018 at 1:30 pm. A Graveside Service will be held at Mountain View Cemetery, 5455 Fraser Street in Vancouver on Wednesday, January 2, 2019 at 11:00 am.

If any longshoreman that knew Dad or dad’s friends attending the burial on Jan 2 we need a couple pallbearers. Let us know.
Thank you all for the kind words and memories you’ve shared about my Dad. It warms my heart to hear! Thank you so much.

Enjoyed reading Burt’s obit. Everything was so true, he was such a special man. Loved his wife, and kids, his job, he was always happy, or so it seemed.
My special thought was the night him and Maria came to the track, as they did often, and we had decided to make bet. Burt bought the ticket, and we didn’t back it up,and of coarse it came in the other way, just missed all, that money.Looked out into the crowd, there is Burt with the ticket stuck to his for head. Oh how we laughed. Many great times, old friend. Our union made us strong. Butch and Lee Macri
