I already put in my message on October 31st, but I just remembered and found this photo that I wanted to share.

I find it hard to believe that dear Hilde is no longer with us.  It is hard to express how much she will be missed here in Vancouver. I've known Hilde for over two decades since she first came to one of my financial classes in the West End.  She took such a great interest in life and certainly touched everyone she came into contact with. Her energy and adventurousness was a tonic that inspired me.
Well, Hilde, it is on to new adventures now. I will miss you greatly.

Last week we heard that Hilde suddenly has passed away.
Memories have passed the last few days from our stay with you in Gouda, the family days and weekends and your visit with us on the farm in Oldeberkoop.

Wat jammer dat Hilde er niet meer is. Veel te jong overleden en ook totaal onverwacht.  En dan komen de herinneringen boven. Die van mij gaan wel een tijdje terug in de tijd. Logeren in de Joubertstraat in Gouda. Met zijn drieën op zolder slapen! En heel wat afgelachen...Het was altijd gezellig.
En toen het plotselinge vertrek van Hilde naar Canada. Best wel dapper - maar ze had er zin in! En ze is er in geslaagd een heel nieuw leven op te bouwen.  Heel bijzonder!
Ik heb haar later in Nederland nog een paar keer gezien. Ze was nog altijd de Hilde van vroeger: vriendelijk en goedlachs en een beetje mysterieus. 
Zo verdrietig dit nieuws. Ik wens Margreet, Henk-Jan en Harm heel veel sterkte. Jullie zullen haar  missen!

We remember the day Hilde, our cousin,  gave her farewell party before she went to Canada. She was so enthusiastic and so confident about her future in Canada.
Afterwards we saw Hilde a few times and we always get the impression that she had a good life in Canada.
The news of her pass away came unexpectedly and made us very sad.
We wish Margreet, Henk Jan, Harm and other family and friends all the best in these sad moments.

I’m so sad to hear of Hilde’s passing. My sincere condolences to her family.

I met Hilde running. We ran at the YM Sunday mornings in the marathon clinic and from the YW every Tuesday and Thursday at 5:30pm with the running gang! It goes without saying we covered hundreds of miles together! I remember once running through the trails at Stanley Park and Hilde telling me these trails were her backyard (since she lived in the West End). Photo from 1994!

I will miss that big smile!

What sad news to hear of Hilde's passing. I met Hilde years ago at the YWCA where we became "yoga buddies" every Friday after work. We made a point of claiming "our space" to sit next to each other and catch up on the week. Her long hair tied in ponytails behind each ear was so delightful! Yes to her mischievous grin and easy laugh, yes to warm hugs whenever we'd meet. I'm so happy to have at least once celebrated her birthday with wine and appetizers after yoga. 

Hilde was a person who appreciated life and made the best of whatever came her way.  I admired her patience and goodwill, her straightforward manner, her self-discipline--and her playfulness!  Although I'd seen her less frequently since I retired, I am truly saddened that she has left us. But happy to remember her as a cheerful and affectionate friend who cherished others. All of us will miss her. My deepest condolences for your loss to Margreet, Henke Jan, Harm, and Lillian.

A very sad message. Our family tie is that Hilde's mother and my mother were sisters. There were three Knoppien sisters: Janny, my mother, Elly and Mini, Hilde's mother. Neither is still with us. And now Hilde passed away, as the first of this Knoppien generation. After her big step to emigrate to Canada, we have only rarely met her when she came to the Netherlands. So, my memories date back to the time before she bravely started her new life. It is very good to read that in Canada she is remembered as an intelligent, helpful person with a lot of humour. We mostly  think of her as a friendly young woman who, for us quite suddenly, entered her big adventure. Something that we could harldly expect of her, in that time. We wish Margreet, Henk-Jan, Harm, Lillian and all who have known Hilde well, all the best in this sad moment.

I was so very sorry and shocked to hear about Hilde's death.  I first met Hilde at Kilborn when I interviewed her as my boss Jim Miller had wanted me to get help in the Purchasing department.  She was by far the best applicant for the position.  She was knowledgeable, dedicated and sure of herself.  She even told me her IQ was higher than mine, so no surprise she took over from me when I went on to a different position in the company :).  It was always fun seeing her at our Kilborn get togethers and I will always remember the good times we had kayaking in Deep Cove, and white river rafting on the Thompson River.  My deepest condolences to her family.

I was shocked to the core when I first heard about Hilde passing.
It still seems like only yesterday that I saw her.
I worked with her at Ledcor, in the office next to where she sat.  She would often stop in to my office for a chat on her way to or from the kitchen or at around 5pm as the day was winding down.
She'd share stories of her life and travels.  She'd also give me advice on situations in my life.
Hilde's positivity, honesty and genuine-ness, her gentle kindness and her cheeky but subtle sense of humour made her a well loved colleague and friend, not just to me, but to many people in the office.
I am grateful to have met Hilde and miss her a great deal.

               I met Hilde back in the early 90-ies during our Kilborn's days; although I can't claim a really close friendship between us but a good memory of warmth, calmness, patience, ethical respect for others, sharpness of her mind and chirpy sense of humor (a mix of all of which usually accompanied her anywhere she was), will stay with me forever.  
              There was an internal light of a highly intelligent person coming from underneath her casual and ordinary appearance, and people had felt that light around Hilde. Not too many of us with grey hair are taking musical lessons to play flute for pleasure - Hilde did!  
               May then sound of flute comfort her family and loved ones during this horrible, unexpected and tragical time of her so untimely passing.  She was loved and will be missed by all of us.  Rest In Peace Hilde.

Onze oprechte deelneming bij het overlijden van jullie dierbare zus Hilde. Waren geschokt door het bericht dat we kregen op zondagmorgen dat je was overleden. Ik koester de herrinneringen aan onze trip naar Canada in 1978 (oktober).We hebben daar veel gezien o.a Niagra Valls, de busreis van Ontario naar Winnipeg (fam.bezoek) en huwelijksfeest van oom en tante. Jij ging nog door naar Vancouver en ik terug richting Ontario.
Wij wensen Fam. vrienden en collega`s veel sterkte komende tijd met dit grote verlies.

Bijna 50 jaar geleden kwamen Hilde en ik bij elkaar in de klas op de RSG in Gouda. Al gauw vormden we een hechte vriendinnengroep met Lenie en Anneke S.  Regelmatig kwamen we ook bij jullie thuis op de Joubertstraat/Sportlaan,  waar we altijd gastvrij werden ontvangen door jullie ouders . 
Na de middelbare school hebben we Hilde nog opgezocht  in Engeland,  waar ze werkte als kaasmeisje.  Mooie herinneringen. Daarna gingen we ieder onze eigen weg en verloren elkaar uit het oog. En dan nu zo'n verdrietig bericht.  Ik wens jullie heel  veel  sterkte! 



It is with sadness and shock that I heard of Hilde passing so soon.

I met Hilde at Kilborn and then we went on to work together at Wardrop. We worked in close proximity as she worked in procurement and I worked in contracts. As I required help, Hilde very quickly let me know that her priority was first with the procurement department and only if she had time would she assist with my work. Setting her position made for a very good working relationship.

Hilde was friendly, had a good sense of humour, was dedicated and ready to assist when she could. She was very easy to be around.
 
Over the last few years, we only met at the annual Kilborn get together. It was a joy to see and chat with her then. I will miss seeing her.

Rest in peace Hilde and thanks for making my life brighter over the years.

I met Hilde while marathon training at the YMCA. She was so supportive and encouraging.

So sorry to hear of the sudden passing of Hilde Bakker. My sincere condolences to members of her family. I recall her years ago as a colleague at Kilborn Engineering in Vancouver. Although I did not know her well, I remember her as a knowledgeable, helpful and friendly lady. We had something in common as I spent 9 years of my youth after World War 2 living in Holland (Den Haag).  Sincerely, John Nixon.

Where to begin?  

I first met Hilde at Kilborn Engineering.  She was the new executive assistant in the Purchasing Department.  You immediately noticed that she was a bit reserved, displayed a confident and good attitude, was very polite and helpful.  The puzzling part about her, was what appeared to be no sense of  or lack of humour.  Right off the bat I messed up in that I could not pronounce her given name correctly.  No matter how hard I tried.  So any time that I would cross her path, I was met with a piercing stare.  Look out buddy.  This went on until one day the Kilborn Group met for a Christmas lunch.  Seeing her there cheerfully talking to others, she caught my eye, gave a great big smile and this changed forever the first impression that I had of her.   She had set me up.

From then on, I discovered how she really cared about life.  About the people around her and those who she worked with.  She had her own way of kindness which she never failed to show when needed.  Mostly I will remember her for her really great sense of humour and I am sure all who were fortunate enough to know her, will agree.

She will be missed but not forgotten.

May you be held in the palm of the hand of your God until we all meet again.

I was a beneficiary of knowing Hilde through work.   She was always gracious to me and made me feel important.   I was sad to learn the news and am only comforted when I imagine that she is in that 'better place'.   Gosh, I hope so.   She deserves the best!   I'll miss her.   Fraser

Hilde was incredibly bright and had a great sense of humour.  She was a pleasure to work with. I was shocked and saddened to learn of her passing. My condolences to her family. Hilde will be missed.

I worked with Hilde starting at Kilborn Engineering , then Wardrop Engineering.  She was smart, funny, generous and didn't tolerate fools! She lived for a long time in the West End loving the fact she could walk everywhere and enjoy the beautiful city she had adopted as her own. Even though we didn't see each other often, only at Kilborn reunions, I will miss her very much. To her family, thank you for sharing her and in time, you will remember her with a smile rather than a tear.

My first cousin, Hilde, always kind with a quick ironic sense of humour, worked hard at her profession, loved what she was doing and, was an eager proponent for saving the environment and social justice. If I remember correctly she was eager to support the Raging Grannies - http://www.vcn.bc.ca/ragigran/.

Although our visits were rare, I always enjoyed my visits with her. Hilde was always eager to share her world and views with me. Hilde will be missed by anyone who met here along life's way.

Hilde, you passed on too soon, too young.

Approximately 4 years ago, when I was in Vancouver for a conference, I contacted Hilde and we met at the Copper Chimney restaurant for dinner.  Although, I  hadn't seen Hilde,  my cousin, in over 15 years, we enjoyed a lovely meal together where we shared familiar family stories and caught up on each other's lives.  

After dinner, she brought me on a short tour of the neighbourhood, including the YWCA, where she enjoyed working out and playing sports.  She obviously enjoyed living in Vancouver, felt proud of where she worked and had a community of friends that she felt privileged to be a part of.

I have a beautiful memory of our time together that day.   We had an obvious connection as cousins with a strong genetic bond.  

I am sorry that she passed away at such a young age and wish to express my deepest condolences to her family.
