Konstantinos (Dino) Askounis passed away peacefully on November 12, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Sykea, Laconia, Greece, on December 1, 1932 to Maria and Pierris Askounis. The middle of three boys, he is predeceased by his older brother, Dimo, and his younger brother, Yianni.
During his time in Greece, he was a farmer on the family plantations of olive trees, figs and other crops. During his military service, he was trained as a high altitude rappel instructor.
In 1969, Dino married his village sweetheart, Vasiliki (Vicky) Doumakis. Together they immigrated to Vancouver, Canada in 1974 with their young family, where they built a life filled with love, hard work, and deep community involvement. They raised three sons - Perry (Helen), Nick, and George (Joanna) and he took immense joy and pride in watching his grandchildren grow up: Victoria, Kosta, Dean, Anthony, Konstantina, and Katie. He was also blessed with a large and devoted extended family with whom he spent many years together creating great memories.
Dino loved spending his summers at the family cabin, fishing from the dock and taking in the sun. Even if he never caught a fish, he was out there everyday for hours. He also enjoyed smelt fishing down at Kitsilano Beach and frequented the Kitsilano Showboat to take in the shows.
His presence on the dance floor was legendary; always a delight to watch and full of zest. He loved to sing and dance, bringing warmth, energy and giving life to any gathering; his spirit and laughter lighting up every room wherever he went.
Dino enjoyed hanging out with friends on Broadway drinking coffee and playing cards at the Greek Seniors Centre. Amongst his talents, he was a cook and a painter.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to all the staff at Blenheim Lodge for the exceptional care, kindness, and dignity they provided “Pappou” over the last four years.
In lieu of flowers, donations on his behalf may be made to the Lacons Community Association of BC, where an endowment fund will be created in his memory to further education and cultural programs. [email protected] or Box 118-4500 Arbutus Street,Vancouver, V6J 4A2
He carried music within him,
not just in the songs he loved, but in the way he lived his days.
He celebrated life with an open heart,
finding joy in gathering, laughter, family, moments shared.
Now the melody he lived by plays softer,
but never disappears.
It lingers in every story we tell, in every smile we share for him.
In every moment,
we choose joy,
because he taught us how.
Because the music of a good man
never fades.
