This photo was deeply in my mind. According to my Mum Uncle 3 helped our family a lot after the pass away of my father.  Remember his cooking skill and kind heart.

thank you Uncle 3 三伯爺for your kindness to your nieces, your generosity will be remembered . Also your superb and amazing cooking skills has enlightened  the younger generation demonstrating a good meal can warmly bond the family. May your kind soul be protected at  the right hand of  God and be reunited with your deceased loved ones .  Amen

Three days before he passed away I asked him the capitals of Italy and U.K. and he still managed to give the right answers. (though he gave the sum of 7 and 6 as 12 which was quite "close"). He has a global mindset even though he belongs to the WWII Generation(which even precedes the Silent Generation. I still remember we(with my siblings) played around the colorful Philips world map he gave us as a group toy (he was good in map reading and had won geography award ( 100 catty (picul/tam) or about 60 kg of rice and a Philips world map 1930's edition in which  the Austro-Hungarian Empire and Prussia still exist). We liked to name the world capitals and everything shown on the map, cities, railway, topography, country shapes, boundaries, sense of directions.........and yes geopolitics in later years.....  ........

I am pretty sure he would find fun and peace and explore in that unknown dimension in the Universe/Multiverse and in the meantime we will keep that Philips map on planet Earth.

Despite living far away from Gung Gung, I always enjoyed the chance to visit him in Canada with my parents when I was younger as he was always very kind and generous to me. Later I had the opportunity to stay with him in Hong Kong for a few weeks, where he was a great tour guide. I was also honoured that he was able to come to my university graduation in London.

In particular I will always remember how great a chef he was. He would always make sure I was well fed and happy and he taught me to fry a chinese style egg for breakfast! My best memories will be all the dim sum and meals we shared together.

I will miss him a lot.

It was with the greatest sadness that I learned of the passing of my father-in-law CHAN Kwok Kai (Dad) at Vancouver General Hospital on the 6th of January 2024 in his 98th year after a short illness.

He was an intelligent, modest, kind and generous gentleman.  When visiting his home he cooked marvellous meals, I especially appreciated his fish and soup dishes.  When going  out to eat he took pleasure in leading us to restaurants that served delicious meals.  A joke of his was “What direction shall we go today, North, South, East or West?”  Having chosen a compass point, off he would go and lead us to a restaurant.  He was obviously well known wherever we went going by the greeting he got on arrival.

A wonderful father-in-law who will be missed.  May he rest in peace.
