Laverne Mary Baker

Sunrise: November 4, 1944 – Sunset: June 25, 2018

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our dear matriarch and elder Laverne Mary Baker (nee: Lewis). Laverne was born November 4, 1944 in Vancouver and passed away peacefully on June 25, 2018 surrounded by her children at home on the Mission Reserve IR No 1. She battled lung and bone cancer the fight was short and fierce she was 73 years young we share both our joy in the gift that her life was to us, and the pain that her passing brings.

Laverne grew up on Stawamus IR No. 24 and Cheakamus IR No. 11 reserves and lived in Seattle for many years. She attended Howe Sound Secondary school and over her lifetime she worked in the restaurant industry, was a homemaker, worked for the Squamish Nation in a group home, and a forestry crew and other areas. Throughout her lifetime she served on many Squamish Nation committees, a few were membership, education and recreation. She was active with Elder’s programs and always involved with community events and gatherings, being part of the social fabric of the Nation brought her immense pride. Laverne was strong, resilient and always optimistic she never let her illness prevent her beliefs about faith and remained positive about life. The role of mother, grandma, sister, auntie, cousin and friend for all people who came into her life she has left the legacy of her love and perseverance to those she has touched.

Laverne is predeceased by her parents Fergie and Mabel Lewis, husband Denny Baker and grandson Jeremiah Brelsford. She is survived by and will be dearly missed by her children Krissy(Russell); Dan(Michelle); nephews Aaron and Ferguson; niece Allison; grandnephew Javen. She will be deeply missed by her siblings Cheryl ‘Jane’, Lorne and Earl(Shelly).

A prayer service will be held on Friday, June 29, 2018 at 7:00 pm and a funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 30, 2018 at 10:00 am; both held at Totem Hall(1380 Stawamus Rd, Squamish, BC V8B 0B5), On line condolences can be found at www.dignitymemorial.ca.
