Mary Oblenda Speck was born on July 18, 1958 in Alert Bay, British Columbia, and passed away in Vancouver, British Columbia, on March 15, 2023 at 64 years of age. Mary was a loving woman, who dedicated her life to teaching and helping others. She was a residential school survivor, yet was able to keep strong ties to her culture. She taught her language, and traditional arts and crafts to younger generations; her favourite tradition to teach was sewing button blankets. In addition to her work teaching, she was a dedicated homemaker. She is predeceased by her parents, Lawrence Richard Speck Sr and Christine Dorothy Speck Sr. She is survived by her son Jonathan Dillon (fiancée Chantelle), sisters Christine Speck and Maureen Speck, and brother Lawrence “Shaggy” Speck, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
