I would like to share a few special memories of my grandmother with everyone because she was a remarkable person who meant so much to me. I lived with my grandmother for practically my entire life and I had the privilege of seeing her almost every day. Because of this, I shared a very special and everlasting bond with my grandmother. She was the matriarch of our family and she became a second mother to me. 

My grandmother influenced and impacted my life in so many ways. I admired and respected her greatly. She inspired me to always be a better person and she taught me the important values of integrity, humility, hard work and above all, selflessness. My grandmother was such a caring person who was always willing to help others, while never expecting or asking for anything in return. 

I hold many fond memories of my grandmother that I will cherish forever. She always supported me and she was by my side throughout my life. She was there when I graduated from university and when I got married. She was one of the first to hold my daughter Kayley when she was born and then my son Ryder when he was born. My wife and I are expecting our third child in October and I am deeply saddened that my grandmother will not be here to hold and spend time with our newest baby. 

One very special memory is the day when my grandmother took Kayley on a trip to Metrotown, just the two of them. Kayley was 4 years old at the time.  Kayley remembers riding on the Skytrain and holding my grandmother's hand the entire time. They walked around the mall and my grandmother even bought Kayley an Ariel princess shirt. To this day, that Ariel princess shirt is Kayley's favorite and she will always remember that special day she spent with her great grandmother. My grandmother always gave her unconditional love and care to Kayley. 

The other memory I would like to share is a personal one. About two months ago, I invited my grandmother out for lunch, which unfortunately, ended up being the final time she was able to go out with my family. My dad had driven her to the restaurant which was at Metrotown. After lunch, we offered to drive my grandmother home so that we could spend more time with her.  Due to her weakened condition, she was not able to walk to our parked car. So I suggested that she sit on the small seat of her walker and I could try to push her.  

As we made our way through the mall, I would periodically look at her face and I noticed she was smiling and actually having a good time watching me trying to push her on the walker. However, she soon became more concerned about me and kept asking me if I was getting tired. She was even willing to go through the pain of trying to walk rather than seeing me get tired or hurt from pushing her. This was a prime example of her utmost selflessness and that day is one I will always cherish because of the fun that we shared together. 

I am very grateful that I was able to spend time with my grandmother during her final days. I would visit her at the hospital each morning before I went to work. When I left the hospital on the morning of Friday, July 11th, I could not have envisioned that would be the last time I would ever speak with my grandmother. Looking back, it was absolutely fitting that the final words she would ever say to me were: “Don't worry about me, you should hurry up and get going or else you will be late for work”. She always worried and cared about me over and above herself. My final words to my grandmother were: “Make sure you get some rest and I will come back and see you again tomorrow.” Unfortunately, I was not able to fulfill my promise to her because tomorrow never came, and for that, I am deeply sorry. 

I will always remember my grandmother as a vibrant, strong-willed and fiercely independent person. Seeing her health and body deteriorate over the past few months was very difficult.  Seeing the pain and sorrow in her eyes was heart-breaking.  I can take solace in knowing that she will find peace, comfort and happiness in heaven. 

My grandmother was such a big part of my life that I still cannot believe she is gone. Life will never be the same again without her.  My grandmother loved my family with all of her heart, and we loved her wholeheartedly in return. 

To my beloved grandmother (nean nean), you were truly a remarkable and beautiful person. I am eternally grateful for all the special moments that you shared with me and I thank you for everything that you taught me and I thank you for the unconditional love and care that you always gave to me. I miss you so much, I will always love you, and you will live on in my heart and memories forever.

Celebrating a life well lived. We will cherish the memories forever.

I miss you and love you popo.  You were a remarkable women who will be dearly missed.
