Phau Lan (Jennifer) Pang Born in Sandakan, Sabah, Malaysia on May 29, 1938, passed away peacefully in Vancouver, BC, Canada on Aug 6, 2022 at the blessed age of 84, having battled lung cancer with immense grace and courage over the past 4 years.
Jennifer grew up in a small seaside town Sandakan on the north eastern part of Borneo island, now known as Sabah, Malaysia. From very humble beginnings, Jennifer’s childhood was challenging with hardships, her schooling had to be interrupted countless times to help her family do laundry work to make ends meet. When WWII erupted in 1942 and the Japanese occupied much of South East Asia, Jennifer survived the war with her family by living, hunting and farming in the rainforest of Borneo. Against all odds, Jennifer completed her schooling after the war, to land an executive secretarial position at the Hong Kong & Shanghai Bank in Sandakan, becoming the first woman employee of the bank. Jennifer worked with the bank for 25 years, during which she married her husband of 59 years, Kwong Sang Cheung and raised 4 children.
To provide better opportunities for their children, Jennifer and Kwong Sang immigrated to Ottawa , Canada in 1988, to finally settled in Vancouver in 1990. She worked as a Customer Service Representative at Toronto Dominion Bank until retirement in 2002. A woman of strong faith, church was integral to Jennifer’s life.
She was active in church activities and were known among her friends for her great culinary expertise, joyful garden parties and generous hospitality. Jennifer lived a full live with her devoted husband and children, surrounded by caring friends. Jennifer will be dearly missed by the great many whose lives she had touched. She is survived by her husband Kwong Sang; children Helen, Margaret, Grace and Anthony; sons-in-law Philip Der and Royce Hong; daughter-in-law Jessica Chen; and grandchildren Naomi Der, Eunice Der, Lucas Cheung, and Roxi Aura Hong; her younger brother Peter Pang and family, and nieces and nephews in Malaysia.
