OBITUARY

Robindar Singh Sandhu

23 October, 1949 – 7 January, 2024
IN THE CARE OF

Hamilton Harron Funeral Home

We are sad to announce the passing of our beloved Robindar Singh Sandhu. Sandhu was born in Vancouver, BC, and passed away in Vancouver, British Columbia on Sunday, January 7, 2024.

Robindar “Rob” Sandhu (Dad, Cookie, Uncle Rob) lived his short 74 years on his own terms. This weekend after cracking jokes, sharing nuggets of wisdom, and ensuring we were as ready as we could be to let him go, he left us to reunite with his daughter Ahsha and family members who predeceased him. Rob lives on in our memories with his contagious laugh, quick wit, and constant support.

Rob has moved on but we will never be without him. We will hear his advice when we are going about our daily lives as that little voice in our heads. We will imagine him looking down on us during these times shouting, “J***s C****t, you didn’t think you could get rid of me that fast, did you?”

Rob’s endearing wisdom, strength and love will continue to guide all of us. He will be forever missed by his wife of 50 years, Jaspal, daughter Jeevan, sons Rajan (Erin), Sarji (Randi), his two beloved grandchildren Evan and Hannah, his family, countless friends and neighbours.

“Welcome to Paradise” or “You are now in God’s country” are declarations that Rob would make as he marveled at the mountains and ocean on family drives past Spanish Banks and around UBC.

He was a lifelong Vancouverite and devoted much of his life to being a passionate teacher at David Thompson Secondary, a mentor for gifted students at University Hill Secondary and a strong voice in improving the teaching of Social Studies and Law in British Columbia.

In his roles as a classroom teacher, mentor, Executive member of the BCTF Social Studies Teachers Association and a teacher seconded to the Ministry of Education, he acted as a tireless advocate for students. He was a courageous man who would stand up for the principles and the rights of others even if it put himself in precarious situations.

Rob had a gift for creating bonds with people. His superpower was the ability to lighten the mood and get the best out of people in the best of times but also do the same when individuals were facing their most challenging times. He has been a guiding light and emotional rock for so many people.

Please join us to celebrate his life.

Services will be held at Hamilton Harron Funeral Home at 5390 Fraser St, Vancouver BC on Tuesday January 16th.

A reception will be held from 10 AM to 11 AM if you would like to offer your condolences with services beginning at 11 AM.
