

Mr. Shu Ki Kwan (關樹琪先生)was born in the city of ZhanJiang (湛江市), Guangdong Province (廣東省), China, on February 6, 1930 as the eldest son of Mr. Sum Ping Kwan (關心平) and Mrs. Kung Mui Kwan (關陳觀梅). At age 19, he married his beloved wife, Fung Yee Kwan (關黄鳳儀) who passed away in 2016. Both Mr. and Mrs. Kwan were primary school teachers during their early career in Hong Kong. In 1973, they emigrated from Hong Kong to Vancouver, B.C. and continued to operate a day care facility business.
Mr. Shu Ki Kwan always put family first. To his extended family, he was the leader, a hard worker, and a wise man. He spent his life loving to learn, build, and experiment. He was skilful in doing construction and repair works, mostly self-taught, despite having a language barrier in English. With hard work and perseverance, he was able to maintain multiple rental properties, thereby securing a middle-class income. He is a classical example of a successful first generation immigrant from Asia to North America. Family was a high priority. Mr. Shu Ki Kwan together with his wife instilled great values, through their compassion and devotion, to their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They are the pillars of their family.
Mr. Shu Ki Kwan is survived by his children: Joe (Georgina), Stella (K.K.), Herman (Hsinyi) and Cecilia (Danny). His eldest daughter Margaret (Andrew) unfortunately passed away in 2023. He has 12 grandchildren: Irene (Armando), Amelia (Brenton), Elliott (Kristy), Ryan (Grace), Clive, Douglas, Preston (Vivian), Jason (Vicky), Tiffany (Ken), Allison, Devin and Teegan, and 10 great-grandchildren: Declan, Murdoch, Rowan, Jake, Alexis, Henrik, Lucas, Evan, Eisen, Siena.
Mr. Shu Ki Kwan will be remembered as a creative, hard working, intelligent and ethical person. He has been a valiant fighter to the very end. He was an excellent fatherly figure who has become an inspirational role model to each and every one in the family. He will always be greatly loved and sorely missed. May he rest in peace.
The memorial ceremony will be held at Hamilton Harron Funeral Home, 5390 Fraser Street, Vancouver, B.C. on Saturday, June 29, 2024 at 10:00 am, followed by the burial service at Ocean View Burial Park, 4000 Imperial Street, Burnaby, B.C. at 12:00 pm. He will rest in peace next to his beloved wife.
