Viola Morten (Marchesi), 87, of Burnaby, BC, passed away on February 21, 2024 surrounded by her loving family after a brief illness.
Viola was born on December 26, 1936 to Augusto Marchesi and Maria Giuliani in Rumo, TN, Italy. In 1958, Viola married Gino Morten in Rumo and went on to have two children, Piergiorgio and Eddie. Immigrating to Canada in 1960, Viola lived in Penny and Prince George before finally settling in Burnaby, BC.
Viola’s life was often defined by hard work and sacrifice, but above all, it was defined by the love and commitment she had for her family. Her home was always open to those who needed a place to stay, no matter the circumstance. She was a proud mother of two deaf-blind sons who went on to have notable achievements in sport.
Later in life, she was a dedicated Nonna and Bisnonna, a title that brought her an immeasurable amount of joy. She had a sharp wit and delightfully unique sense of humour and to be teased by her was to be loved by her.
She was a dedicated member of the Trentino-Alto Adige Cultural Society of BC for many decades, a community that kept her connected to the home she often yearned for.
She is survived by her sons Piergiorgio (Shelley), and Eddie, grandchildren Aaron (Molly), Rachel (Nicola), Sarah (Gabriel), Jordan, and Trevor (Beth), as well as her great-grandchildren Luca, Enzo, and Elia, and her many nieces and nephews in Italy.
Services will be held at St. Mary’s Parish, 5251 Joyce St, on Thursday, February 29 at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to CNIB.
