Mr. Wai Man Chang was a native of Litang, Da'an Village, Enping, Guangdong. Born on the sixth day of the sixth month in 1929 of the lunar calendar, he entered a world that would require great strength, adaptability, and resilience—qualities that would come to define his character.
He received his early education in his cherished hometown, grounding himself in the values of community and family from a young age. As a young man, he ventured out to build a life, traveling frequently between Guangzhou, Hong Kong, and Macau. He found his calling on the sea, working as a skilled marine engineer on cargo ships that served these bustling regions.
In April 1951, Mr. Chang embarked on a beautiful new chapter when he married his beloved wife, Ms. Chin Kam Cheng. Together, they began building their family; their eldest son, Ting Chum, was born in Guangzhou, and their second son, Ting Fong, was born in Hong Kong. Later that very same year, driven by a deep desire to provide a brighter future for his loved ones, he took a courageous leap. With the guidance and assistance of his second uncle, he traveled across the world to Venezuela in South America to seek a new livelihood.
For the next seventeen years, Mr. Chang endured the heavy burden of being physically separated from those he loved most. Yet, despite the vast ocean between them, he never once wavered in his profound commitment to his family in Hong Kong. He worked tirelessly, regularly sending money home to support his parents, his wife, and his growing children. This period of his life stood as an enduring testament to his selflessness and his deep sense of familial responsibility.
His hard work and sacrifices finally bore fruit in 1972, when he joyfully arranged for his wife and children to join him in Venezuela. The family was finally reunited under one roof, and their happiness was made complete with the birth of their third son, Ting Chun, in 1974.
In 1996, seeking a peaceful and supportive environment for their later years, the family immigrated to Vancouver, British Columbia. Here, Mr. Chang found a welcoming community. He deeply enjoyed gathering with relatives and fellow townsmen, finding great joy in sharing life experiences, swapping stories, and staying connected to his roots.
When his beloved wife passed away in 2018, it was a profound loss, yet Mr. Chang carried forward with remarkable strength. He remained physically robust, independent, and mentally sharp well into his nineties. Up until his final month, he could often be seen out on his own, navigating the city on foot or by public transit, a vibrant and familiar presence to those who knew him.
Over his final two years, he also thoroughly enjoyed attending the S.U.C.C.E.S.S. Adult Day Program on a weekly basis, which brought him great camaraderie, joy, and a wonderful sense of community.
Between late August and early September of 2026, Mr. Chang suffered two accidental falls at home. These falls resulted in an intracranial hemorrhage, nerve damage, and subsequent confusion that sadly left him unable to eat. Despite receiving more than twenty days of intensive, compassionate medical care, the physical toll was too great to overcome.
On the evening of September 28, 2026, surrounded by the thoughts of those who loved him, he passed away peacefully at the honorable age of 100 at VGH.
His passing leaves a profound void. His sons, daughters-in-law, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren are deeply grieved, yet they take comfort in the incredible legacy of hard work, devotion, and love that he leaves behind.
May he rest in peace, and may he find eternal serenity and joy in the world beyond.
