It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Wai Kan Lew on May 28, 2026, at age 89. He passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family. He is survived by his spouse, two sons, three daughters, their respective spouses, two grandsons, five granddaughters, and a great granddaughter. He will be fondly remembered and dearly missed by all.
Born and raised in Shar Dui, Xinhui (Sunway) County in Guangdong Province, Kan left China in the mid 1950s, briefly staying in Hong Kong before settling in Vancouver, B.C., where he was later joined by his future wife, Wai Ying.
Kan owned and operated a supermarket for many years with his brother and brother-in-law until his retirement in 2000. He was an active member of the Lew Mao Way Tong Association. He enjoyed travelling, exploring Chinatowns and immersing himself in new cultures. He also enjoyed watching playoff sports, attending Cantonese opera, playing mah jong, cooking, and spending time with family and friends.
Kan was hardworking, kind, and considerate, and was always concerned about others. He was always willing to step in to help others, without being asked or having any expectation of receiving anything in return.
The family expresses heartfelt gratitude to Vancouver General Hospital, VCH caregivers, and home support services for their skilled and compassionate care. The family also deeply appreciates the kindness and support shown by family, relatives, and friends.
A visitation will take place at Glenhaven Memorial Chapel at 1835 East Hastings Street, Vancouver, on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, from 7 to 9 p.m. A Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, at 12:30 p.m. at Glenhaven Memorial Chapel, followed by a burial at 2:30 p.m. at Forest Lawn Cemetery, 3789 Royal Oak Avenue, Burnaby.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, the VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation, or to the Canadian Red Cross (Health Equipment Loan Program).
