Yasuko passed away peacefully in her home with family by her side on September 12, 2020 at almost 95 years old. She was born on December 21, 1925 as the eldest of 9 children born to Sozo and Gen Mochizuki in Haney, BC. She was an exceptional mother to 4 children Dick (Setsuko), Judy (Robin), Len (Masumi) and Violet (Dave) and grandmother to Jeremy, Brandon (Chika), Sachi (Lena), Melanie (Dan), Trevor and Megan. Yasuko was predeceased by her husband Haruo (Harry) in 2005.
Yasuko led a full life spending her childhood growing up in Haney and Barnhartvale/Kamloops area working on the family farm and helping to raise her siblings. In her early 20s she attended classes in Westwold where she learned to become a skilled seamstress. In 1950 she married Haruo Komori and pioneered a new life in the Tin Cup and 70 Mile House areas where she worked full time doing payroll for over 100 personnel at the Komori Lumber Company while raising a family of 4 kids at the same time. No small feat!
The family moved to Vancouver in 1962 where Yasuko enjoyed endless hours of volunteer work and social events at the Vancouver Buddhist Temple. She was also an avid 5 pin bowler, lifelong gardener and an exceptional fisherperson. She continued to work full time until the sawmill operation was sold in 1979. Yasuko enjoyed traveling the world with Harry and continued to make trips to Hawaii up to age 90. In her later years she particularly enjoyed ice cream, the birds living in her garden and spending time at home with her loyal and beloved cat Halo and family.
Our mother was an inspiration to us all. She was kind and thoughtful and community minded, always willing to lend a hand or make time for those in need. She was graceful in her ways and eternally patient and thankful through her elder years. She taught us many of life’s important lessons by example and was never shy of hard work. She was a good listener and we are grateful for all that she did for us.
We will miss her dearly and life as we know it will not be the same without her. We will always remember her cheerful, positive perspective, steadfast demeanor, and memorable expressions that always made us laugh. We wish you well Mom and hope you’re out relaxing and exploring the world with dad once again
Due to Covid 19 restrictions, the funeral service is limited to immediate family, but there will be an opportunity for those who wish to pay their last respects during a viewing at the Glenhaven Memorial Chapel, 1835 E Hastings Street on Friday September 25, 2020 between 6-8 pm.
