A MESSAGE FROM THE FAMILY
In lieu of flowers Take someone you love out for a bite to eat - Mom loved dimsum, Each meal, a celebration... In lieu of flowers, speak to a stranger. Mom could sit beside anyone And, by the end, Know their story as if it were her own. Take a walk — a slow one. Pause for the flowers, For the turning leaves, For the soft beauty hiding in plain sight. Mom walked like that, Even with her walker — stopping to admire, To gather, to press leaves into pages. Instead of flowers, invite someone over. Set the table, share a meal. Mom’s home was open to all, Her kitchen, always warm. Let go of old grudges. Make peace if you can. Mom’s temper was quick, But her forgiveness was quicker still — Ready to say sorry, Ready to begin again. Put on a song — her favorite (Shanghai Beach!) Sing it loud. Dance without shame. She loved a good karaoke night, Loved the joy in music shared. If you see a baby, Coo, smile, offer a cuddle. Mom’s heart always melted At the sight of tiny hands and sleepy eyes. Find a fall leaf — Crimson or gold — And slip it between the pages of a book. Mom did that, Marking time with nature’s quiet beauty. Give something back. Volunteer. Mom believed in showing up, In doing what you can with what you have. And if you can, Start something new — Or pick up where you left off She taught herself to knit Just by looking at a sweater or a photo Every stitch, an act of wonder. So in lieu of flowers, Live like she did: Fully, generously, With open arms and an open heart.
